Tamoxifen - how quickly do the effects start/

Hi Ladies
I have been on Tamoxifen now for about 25 days or so. Today, I started a period - quite suddenly. I usually know when it is going to happen. I am not due to start a period for another 7+ days.

Today I have a manc headache also. So far, I dont think I have had any what you would call hot flushes. I feel that maybe my body temperature is higher than normal. (I am usually a ‘cool’ blooded person!!).

Is this it for me on tamoxifen, or is it too early to say what the effects will be for me? Is it that I will get hot flushes as my periods get less?
Can anyone advise me?

Thanks
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I started Tam about 6 weeks aqgo and i got side effects from day one. I am also on Zoledax too though so im not sure that they made it worse! I get the full hot flushes, aching joints, neck pains and mood swings!
I had one period but i wont get another one now until im off the zoledax so im not sure about the hot flushes getting worse as your periods stop!

Take care

Hi Lisa,

I started Tamoxifen on Nov 1st last year and really didn’t get any side effects at all. As my periods also continued my onc decided to start me on Zoladex as well, and I have been on this since jan. Soon as I started the Zoladex so the side effects started!!! Hot flushes, night sweats, aching joints…

So, it may well be that you won’t really be troubled by side effects from the Tamoxifen alone. Hopefully not anyway!

Take care,

Kelly

Hi Lisa

Ive been on Tamo for a year and a half now, i found that if i took a different brand (novladex) i had side effects like leg pain extreme tiredness and the occasional hot flush at night while i was in bed.

I have stuck with the brand i got originally from the chemist at the start by CP pharmaceuticals this seems to agree with me as i only have the tiredness now.

I have had periods since i started though i missed April and May but started again in June, many people do not stop bleeding… Hey say guess i,m one of them…Sods law eh lol…

Hi Lisa

I am the same as mariead1, as I too have been on Tam for about 6 weeks. I had some immediate symptoms like pain and weakness in my hand, (doc thinks it could be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome which can be caused by a change in hormones)

I also don’t know if this is it or weather more symptoms will come with time as at the moment I think this is manageable.

You say about your period, I had a mirena coil removed and therefore had my first period in 8 years…now that was a shock to my body

Hi all,
I started what I call my ‘old lady’ pills a week ago - Tamofen - 3 weeks to the day after my last chemo. As I mentioned - at length - on the aqua jogging thread I just started, my general health has been improving so dramatically over the past 8 weeks that I’m ready to face the probable effects, but there’s been nothing so far. As I would probably have been up for ovary removal even without BC (they’ve been troublesome in the past & there is a cyst on one of them) & am 50 anyway, menopause is hardly a surprise. My onc firmly endorsed gentle exercise in helping to control symptoms & this aqua jogging is exactly that. I’m hoping for the best, because I’m not ready for ‘old lady’ syndrome yet. Actually, I feel stronger & more cocky every day that chemo recedes. Rads are also problem-free after a week, with 4 to go.

Is that the end of this tunnel up there in front?

Hi Julie,

Ha ha you sound just like me, I always think I’m missing out on valuable treatment and stuff! Zoladex is an implant, given every 28 days (sometimes every 3 months too) usually alongside Tamoxifen, for 2 years. Zoladex suppresses the ovaries, basically putting them to sleep temporarily. I wasn’t on it at first but was soon put on it when the Tamoxifen didn’t stop my periods. I have mine every 28 days and will be having it for 2 years. As I’m only 36 I am hoping my periods will start again soon as I finish taking it!!

Some women are also given Zoladex whilst they are on chemo to preserve ovarian function.

Hope that helps, apologies if its stuff you knew already,

Take care,

Kelly
