Hi, I have been on tamoxifen for 4 years, I’m still pre menopause and today I found out I have got fibroids and a cyst on my ovaries. I’m now just really worried as this is all hormonal and my breast cancer was hormonal. Could tamoxifen have an effect on this? I know fibroids are caused from estrogen and tamoxifen is an estrogen blocker.

Hello Charls
Thanks for your post.
It’s understandable that you’re worried and have questions about the effect that tamoxifen could have on your fibroids and ovarian cyst.
Tamoxifen can affect the lining of the womb (uterus), which may become thickened. Occasionally, there is an increased risk of polyps or ovarian cysts. Most of the research has been carried out on post-menopausal women and so its unclear the effect this will have for someone in your situation.
I wonder if you’re under the care of a gynaecologist for your recent diagnosis. If you haven’t already done so, do speak to them about your concerns. You could also contact your breast care nurse or treatment team to discuss this…
We offer a range of other free supportive services for anyone who has had a diagnosis of breast cancer which you may be interested in.
Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can often be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. You can be in touch with your volunteer by phone or email and they can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.
You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0800 138 6551 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.
