Hello I am new here.

I have been taking Tamoxifan for three weeks now, and also having radiotherapy.

I went to the doctors as I was worried about the severe pains in my joints and muscles, the doctor told me it was a side effect of the Tamoxifan and gave me some pain killers to help.

My worry is that as I am also a Carer to my Husband and taking the pain killers will probably make me sleepy, which I am also feeling due to the radiotherapy, does anyone know if the pains in the joints will last for the 5 years that I am on Tamoxifan or will it gradually wear off?

Thanks.

Tamoxifen Hi Val

I’ve also been on Tamoxifen for 3 weeks and haven’t had joint pain but have been weepy and depressed and have been having dreadful hot flushes and nightsweats.

There was a discussion on here recently about different brands of Tamoxifen causing different side-effects due to the bulking agents. Nolvadex is the original and purest form and many women seem to have fewer side effects on this so it may be worth asking your GP to specify this brand when you get your next prescription. Your pharmacy may not have it in stock but you can order it.

Bear in mind also that side-effects from most medication tends to subside after a couple of months once your body has become used to it.

What painkillers have you been given? They don’t all cause sleepiness. I had terrible all over joint, muscle and bone pain during Taxotere and found diclofenac (Voltarol) helped and didn’t make me drowsy. You can take it along with paracetamol.

Is there anyone who can help out with your husband while you’re doings rads? I’m starting mine soon and have been told to expect to be ‘shattered’. Try to go easy on yourself and take any help going.

Thank you Lola for you kind reply, it has helped me a lot.

The Painkillers I have been given are Co-Dydramol paracetamol based.

I am a bit concerned as when i went for radiotherapy and mentioned about the pains, the nurse asked me if I had a bone scan, just hoping the cancer has not spread,

My Children really help a lot but don’t like to bother them too much as they have children of their own.

Thank you so much.
