Hi all,
For anyone just starting out on chemo and navigating taste changes, I just wanted to share some foods I’ve lived off through my treatment. Hope its helpful:
- “umami” flavours: miso soup (without the seaweed though - which is too salty); soy and sesame oil (add to rice or veg, like broccoli or peas)
- smoked fish (once you’ve got nausea under control!), tin tuna (with mayo/yoghurt and lemon)
- eggs
- banana chips - these actually taste like banana, same for dried mango, papaya and pineapple.
- ‘Avonaise’: 2-3 hard boiled egg, cut up and add to a muxture of: splat of greek yoghurt (and/or mayonaise), fresh lemon, half a squashed avocado. Eat on rice cakes or rivita.
- tropical fruit flavours - multifruit actimel drinks go down well.
- San peligrino sparkling water - its pricey but really tastes the disgusting taste away
- Fried rice - simple take away egg fried rice.
- Camomile tea - with a bit of sugar
- Porridge with cinnamon and a bit of sugar
If these sound like things you would find gross before chemo then they’re probably not for you. But through trial and error they have been lovely little flavour islands in a sea of tastelessness or ‘blurghhhh’.
Good luck wherever you are in treatment.
