Hiya all,
I need some advice - I only get SSP when I am off from work - can I apply for a tax rebate ? I obviously pay the amount of tax based on my full time earnings but I have missed quite a bit of work now !
I might be clutching at straws but every penny counts at the moment !

Are you sure you are due one?
If you are paid SSP by your employer, then this is taxable and should have been paid through their normal payroll process, so any refund would have automatically been adjusted through the payroll. Unless you are on a week1/month1 code, in which case you may be due something. You will need your P60 to do this. If you follow the link below (moderators - is this ok, it’s only to an HMRC webpage) it gives you lots of information on how to claim any refund due
hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/overpaid-thro-job.htm
I think the issue is not the SSP as such but having a reduced income, but you would have paid quite a lot of tax earlier in the year while on full income, so you may have overpaid? Payroll should be able to sort this out for you, you basically need your total pay for the year and your total tax paid and your tax code. Without any of those three you can’t find if you’re due a refund; if you have all three figures ready it’s not difficult.
Broadly speaking, Total pay minus (taxcode x10, ie your taxfree personal allowance, including any extra tax-deduction allowances you have claimed) is the amount you pay tax on, then times the bottom slice of that by the starting rate and the next slice by basic rate, that’s how much tax they should have taken off, if they took off more than that it’s likely you can claim it back. Slices and rates are on the HMRC website and they change every year. Payroll would normally carry forward an adjustment into next year’s code but they can help if you want to claim it directly. If you have actually left then you will need to deal with your tax office, and you find their details on your P60 (if you’re still working) or P45 (if you have left) This may not be your local office: I’ve been taxed from offices in East Kilbride, Penzance and Southwales amongst other places, but never an office near my home! But the local office can also help if you walk in clutching the paperwork.
Thanks Roadrunner and Hymil,
Yes the issue is my reduced income. When I get my p60 I will approach the tax office and see what happens - its worth a try !
Many thanks,

One thing’s for sure, they won’t come running chasing after you to press it into your pocket! Bit different to if we owe them…
Good luck!
