Tender breast and mammogram

I am someone who reacts badly to hospital letters even if I am expecting it. Today I received a letter to have my first mammogram following surgery and radiotherapy and I am quite worried about it because I am still tender where the radiotherapy treated the lymph nodes. Id this normal after 11 months? I don’t really know why I am writing this because I know I will have to have it but sometimes just writing it down helps my anxiety. Thanks for reading

Hi aliceliza

I can totally understand your trepidation, I’m having my 2nd mammogram after finishing treatment on 8.12 and am anxious but I can say that the staff I met at my mammogram last year were excellent. Very supportive and empathetic, my breast was also tender but they dealt with everything very professionally.

If you are still concerned please remember you can always contact your breast cancer nurse to discuss things and hopefully get some reassurance

I wish you well xx

Hi @aliceeliza

I understand your concerns, I had my first mammogram a few weeks ago following lumpectomy and radiotherapy. And like you, my breast is tender and firmer I expect.

I won’t lie it was uncomfortable compared to my normal breast, but radiographer did all she could to position carefully and as quick as possible. It was probably only a couple of minutes at most with the compression, and then it’s over.

Hope all goes well.

Hi

Ive recently had my second one and it wasn’t as uncomfortable as I found the first one last year, but doable.

Before leaving after this years I asked if I could use ibuprofen gel rubbed in before next years and the radiographer I had said that would be okay, so you could ring the breast department and check.

Hope all goes well with yours
