This Morning Today

Dear All

I caught a bit of Simon Cowell’s mum on This Morning today but not all of it, and having had breast cancer she was saying she was supporting a charity who are researching into a drug that reduces the risk of secondaires? I don’t know if I’ve got this right, but did anyone see it who can fill me in on what she was saying?

Thanks

Hi Cecelia

I caught some of that too while I was doing the ironing! I’m sure the charity she mentioned was called ABC (Against Breast Cancer), if that’s of any help.

Hey,

I think it’s this

aabc.org.uk/about/research.shtml

It’s looking at things like soya and phyoestrogens - whether they have any beneficial/harmful effects or none at all…

Liz

Great, i’ll check it out, thanks very much!

I just thought I would jump in here as I say the word “soya” and just wanted to put my oar in here. I started to drink soya milk as I thought it would be good for me but I had such discomfort in my breasts that I rushed off to the Dr. She said to stop drinking the soya milk and it contained certain hormones so I did and the discomfort went. Don’t think this may be relevant to this thread but having seen soya and whether it is beneficial or harmful I thought I would comment my experience.

Hi there

Soya contains natural oestrogens so it is believed to be harmful. My sister uses it for her menopausal hot flushes to replace her oestrogen so if you are ER+ it should be avoided. Hope this helps.

Yes, I did see the programme. The above link will get you there. Basically, they are researching life style - and life style changes - to see whether this unfluences the disease in any way. As to soya products of any kind (and this includes supplements), if you are oestrogen receptor positive, any soya is strictly out. I took it for years after my first dx to help with Tamoxifen side effects and no-one ever mentioned that this might not be a good idea. Since 2nd dx have been specifically advised by consultant to avoid all phytooestrogen producst (i.e. soya, hummous and supplements etc. which contain soya isoflavanoides). I would suggest before you take any supplements, check with your nurse or consultant.

Hi Birgit

I also ate loads of soya and, when I was given Tamoxifen leaflet and prescription, I checked with bc nurse that my diet was ok. She said no soya but not to be paranoid about it. What worries me is that wouldn’t have mentioned it otherwise and lots of women take soya to cope with menopause symptoms, my mother in law included who was dx 6 months before me and on same treatment. Also there is soya in almost everything as most loaves of bread are made from soya flour. I went a bit paranoid at first now I have relaxed a bit but i could eat hummous for England and crave that and marmite ( B6 deficiency maybe ). On a funny note…if I don’t feel like sex, a marmite sandwich does the trick as my husband loathes it…lol
