This weeks books

New Jackie Collins - holiday reading - Married Lovers

Books I’ve enjoyed over the last few weeks:

Girl Meets Boy - Ali Smith. Wild and wonderful reworking of an ancient Greek myth, set in Inverness.
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao - Junot Diaz: clever, well written, funny
The Suspicions of Mr Whicher - Kate Summerscale. If you like Victorian melodrama, you’ll love this! Wilkie Collins based “Woman in White” on the events retold in this book. Corking read for those autumn evenings…

More recommendations for you…
The post Birthday World by Lionel Shriver (author of the incredible book’We need to talk about Kevin). Its a fascinating novel about a woman in a steady, loving, 10 year old relationship with a supportive, caring if somewhat stolid man who then meets another man - a famous snooker player no less - who is the opposite of her current partner. The novel then proceeds to follow her in two scenarios - that of staying with her current lover, and that of her leaving him and setting up with her new lover with whom she has an explosive relationship. Sorry I’ve not phrased this terribly well, but it is well worth a read!
The other book I very much enjoyed, and gave much food for thought was ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ by Mohsin Hamid about a Pakistani man who moves to America and makes a fantastic living and his growing disenchantment with the country post 9/11.
