Throat pain after surgery

Hi,
My wife had a WLE about 3 weeks ago - and has just had a Mastectomy.
After the WLE she had a very painful throat which took about a week to clear up - she was prescribed antibiotics but not sure if this helped or it simply fixed itself.
After Wednesday’s Mastectomy she is again suffering with a painful throat. She is still in hospital so hopefully they will sort her out.
The reason for the post is that I am curious whether others have experienced this - and have you ever been given a reason? (The hospital staff seem a little dismissive of it).
Thanks

Hi

I had a mastectomy in March and had a sore throat for a week. It is because of the tubes they put down during op. Friend of mine just had hysterectomy. Same thing. She has been to doctor who wont prescribe antibiotics and told her to leave it a week and see how it is.

Hope this helps.

I agree, I had it and it was because of the tubes, didnt need any antibiotics, just got better on its own. She would probably have a raised temperature if it was an infection.

Good luck to you and your wife

Louise

Thanks for the quick responses - makes sense. Just knowing that a few others have had the same experience helps a lot.
Thanks

The first thing I did when I woke up after my op in the recovery room, was ask the nurse why my throat was so SORE!!

He told me it was the tube they put down your throat…I think they must ram it in and yank it out!

Hope your wife recovers soon

I agree with the above comment.

I was left with a broken tooth after my mast/recon!!

I also had a sore throat for a week due to the tubes, they must just ram them in - the way I felt I reckon the tube must have been an old garden hose!

Hope your wife is feeling better now,

Tracy

I also had a sore throat after my 8 hour mast and recon. The back of my throat was bright red and there was a circle of white outlining it.
The nurse gave me soluble tablets to gargle with and it did improve after a week. Also sucked throat lozengers.

hi mlindsey

what a thoughtful hubby, your wife is very lucky. the throat thing is quite common, i was lucky it only happened after first op. it is like others say the tubes they put down. but with you on her side she will soon be on the mend. keep up the good work, it must be difficult for you somedays
take care both of you

Having read a lot of the comments on this web site I really hope that I am not a particularly “thoughtful hubby” and that every woman is getting all the support they need.
My wife fought for anti-biotics and got them on Saturday night - her throat is now a lot better. She has also been gargling (sp?) with salt water and sucking throat lozengers. Still almost everyone at the hospital is fairly dismissive of it - and yet based on the comments above it seems that quite a few people suffer.
She is coming home tomorrow - at last! Sentinal Node results next week - I hope they are good news so she doesn’t have to go through more surgery.
Thanks
