Thyroid disfunction

Hi fellow travellers,
I have secondary BC wide spread in bones since June 2023. On my second line of treatment, Capecitabine for 3 months, seems to be controlling mets after progression (bones) in the summer.
Latest PET-CT looks ok, control - stable and reductions in signal >40%.
However, my thyroid has signal now. Its diffuse not nodular and implies hyper or hypo function of thyroid. Could be meds related, blood tests to be done in 2 weeks time. Onc team consider not urgent but as we do I’m worried about impact and consequences.
Anyone in a similar situation with advice to offer for consideration?

Hi, I’ve recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism . Diagnosed with a grade 3 breast cancer in Jan 2023, with 2 effective lymph nodes. Presently on adjuvant Abemaciclib, 14 months into the 2 year course, previously had 6 rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

I’ve done a little research into thyroid and breast cancer and they are articles that link over active thyroid and breast cancer. They suggest a genetic link. I was symptomatic for several months but my symptoms were attributed to Abemaciclib. Three weeks into taking medication carbimazole and I am feeling so much better.

My thyroid disorders was discovered by my Gp, who had been asked in a routine letter in April by my oncologist, to check my LFT’s, cholesterol and HbA1C annually as I am taking Letrozole for 10 years. For some reason she had also added thyroid function test. My liver function had been abnormal and apparently untreated hyperthyroidism can cause abnormal liver function and low white cells and low neutrophils. My white cell count was 2.7 and neutrophils 1.4 prior to commencing treatment. A blood test 2 weeks following commencement of carbimazole showed a marked improvement in all these blood results. I hope your treatment is sorted soon.

Hi SMBW18

Thank you for your post.

It’s understandable you’re worried about these changes, but it’s good to hear your team have given you some reassurance and are arranging your blood tests.

Once your blood results are available your oncology team will arrange any necessary treatments and follow up you may need.
