Tinnitus on E/C

Has anyone suffered tinnitus on e/c? I’ve had my first round and actually found it ok however since immediately after it I’ve noticed my ears are very ‘whooshy’. They’ve always been a bit like that but it’s definitely worse.

Hi
I’ve just got home from my 2nd EC and I found I suffered with tinnitus straight after my first one. The nurses hadn’t heard of it before so no advice really. I’m going to mention it to my oncologist when I see him tomorrow. I’ll let you know if he has any answers

Hello
I have developed tinnitus since having carboplatin and doxitaxel. My oncologist says there are several types of chemo that can cause tinnitus. Maybe you could Google if EC is one of them?
I hope you do well with your treatment and that the tinnitus goes away for you.
Best wishes xx

This is what I have found…

Hiya. Thanks for responding. What has your oncologist said? Is there anything that can be done?

Hello
She said it may or may not go away over time. I’ve seen the ear specialist and she said same. Not a lot they can do except teach you ways to manage it. I’m waiting now to see if it goes and if it doesn’t I’ll go back to them.
Xx

Does it mean that our hearing is damaged from the chemo?

I can’t really answer that as I’m still having some treatment and I think it would be too soon to say if my hearing has been permanently damaged or not. It may be that the tinnitus settles down.
The audiologist said I have good hearing overall.
She did say that the best way to deal with the tinnitus is when it is bothering me to have some low background noise to distract myself from it. She advised against turning up TV or radio to try and drown it out as the tinnitus will just get louder to compete.
It’s not all the time. Sometimes it seems to go away (or I am so busy I don’t hear it).
Xx

That all sounds positive to be honest. Mine doesn’t bother me dreadfully it’s more of an annoyance

I mentioned it to my oncologist today and he told me EC didn’t cause ear damage. He didn’t think it was anything to do with the chemo. Still annoying though !

Mine said it is a side effect hmmmmm he’s referred me to ENT….

Hi @mrshmbucks

I could get the occasional little buzz in my ears before I had my EC in 2021. Unfortunately it became more common when on EC and it’s never gone back to pre EC levels.

It’s not bad - just a mild buzzing in both. Not as much as a loud gig. It will flare up when I’m stressed and if I think about it. I can ignore it to push it in to the background.

Saw my GP at the time who checked my ears - nothing to see to be the cause.

It’s really not a problem - just another of the little BC treatment gifts that pop up from time to time.

Good luck with your chemo and I hope your tinnitus is just a temporary blip.

I’ll see how it goes and I’ll mention it to him again. I’ll tell him what your oncologist said too

This sounds very similar to me

He didn’t seem overly concerned. But he definitely said it is a side effect x

I also have constant ringing in my ears, sometimes I can forget about it and other times it drives me crazy. They said it may never stop but you can take medication for it. I’m in two minds as to what to do.

From the chemo? What medicine have they suggested? I might ask about it.

Yes, from the chemo. I also had taxol, carbo and EC. They mentioned gabapentin but said they would refer me to the pain clinic.

Did you have it before? I did but this has made it worse.
