Tipping

What’s the right thing to do here?? Since I finished tax last May and my toenails/fingernails came out (not all of them), I’ve treated myself to pedicures and half leg wax because I can’t get down to cut toenails and they needed cuticle treatment anyway, and I didn’t want to risk shaving legs, what with the neuropathy and all.

Anyway, the owner of this new place was doing the business on my feet. She’s in partnership with her daughter. She’s very nice, very chatty, very glam - and very rich by the sounds of things. She’s told me about the size of her house and where it is, her expensive holidays, she’s always very nicely dressed in expensive clothes.

Do I tip her?

I haven’t done so far. Been to her about four times now but she always hovers by the till when I pay the receptionist, and I end up giving her a sickly smile and hurry out the door. I just think she’s got lots more brass than I have but it doesn’t stop me feeling like a tight-@rse. Is that because I am one??

No you are not! You never tip the owners of a beauty salon/hairdresser only the employees. I have been going to my hairdresser since 1964 and have never tipped him.

Hi Grannyscouse

Im with you, definately not tight-@arse!!! I feel, if we pay the prices we do for beauty treatments we don’t need to pay a tip!!! With what you have said she sounds like she doesn’t need any tips.

I do tip in a restaurant because wages can be poor. Only to the person who has served us.

Thanks, ladies. I feel better now. In fact, I’ve put off making another appointment because of this, but I’ll get one booked tomorrow.

I had a hairdresser come to my house and when i paid her i was to get £2.00 back but she had no change!!
I went to a salon and paid the exact amount and left feeling guilty because of the attitude of the hairdresser - that salon is cash only by the way. I don’t know about anyone else but i always feel that there is a certain amount of pressure put onto people to tip, and call me tight fisted if you want but i don’t want to tip, prices are dear enough.
