i want to dye my hair a shade lighter and to cover a few grey strands i have. I am a bit weary about what type of hair dye to use and after haveing BC. the reason being as I have hearrd some negative veiws about this, saying the chemicals from the dye can react with the chemicals left in your body after chemo?
ant feedback is much appreciated.
My hair can back very grey after chemo - I did think about dying but I keep getting told how dramatic it looks. The grey is in big chunks, a bit Cruella deVille. I know it needs to be cut into shape but can’t bring myself to let someone near it with scissors. I think I am feeling foolishly over protective towards it.
Anyway I was told to leave it 6 months after you finsh thel ast cycle of chemo then go for it, any colour you fancy.
Glad it has come back - have fun with it.
Love Jacqui
hi guys, thanks for your replies. i am sitting here with a semi permanet hair dye on waiting to be washed off… although it is not a henna make. tut tut
on the other hand it is nearly one year since treatment so hey ho1
Thaks guys
I knew my hair was going to come back grey as I had been dyeing it for 25 years. It has now settled into a lovely shade of pewter and looks dramatic. I am 47 and have a very young face, so I don’t see an oldie looking out of the mirror. I have toyed with colouring it recently, but then the hairdresser advised I would have to go quite fair or blonde and I don’t think I would suit those colours (also I have never wanted to be blonde). When I mention it in the salon, they all say don’t do it as it’s fabulous. I’m totally confident with it, but of course you always get the people who say “when are you dyeing your hair?” like it’s a crime to be grey. I actually like the freedom of not having to get my roots touched up every 4 weeks. I’ve changed my makeup and clothing colours to suit and I can now wear acidic colours I could not wear as a brunette.
All you ladies who are looking to dye their hair, Holland & Barrett do a great range of natural hair colours from blonde to black and all the shades in between and are totally chemical free.
My hair is three different colours, brown, grey & silver so i think i will be colouring as soon as there is a bit more of it
Hi Nadia,
I’ve just dyed my hair after finishing my Chemo in May.I used Clairol nice and easy semi-permanent dye.Like you,I was a bit dubious dying it but now I’m glad I did because it looks so much better and doesn’t seem to have been damaged by it.
Let us know how yours looks.

I’ve just …4 years after finishing chemo’…put a wash in colour on my hair…and I hate it!!..my hair came back mainly dark but with a grey streak at the front and a few strands here and there…I had dyed it for years previously and always vowed once it came back I wouldn’t dye it again…and once this eventually washes out…I won’t be doing it again…think I’d just got used to my grey!!!
I put myself in the capable hands of my hairdresser who used a shampoo-in hair colour to add warmth and give the impression of highlights. It’s still looking good 3 months later. Sorry, but I just couldn’t live with dust-grey hair!
I’m with Cherub on this one… I too had been dying my hair for several years and always said that I wished I’d never started! So… hey… losing my hair was the ideal opportunity to stop colouring it. It has grown back a silvery grey and actually… I like it! And so does everyone else, or at least that’s what they’re saying! I’m only 45 yrs, but the grey gene is obviously in the family… what the heck!! Having always had poker straight hair, it grew in with lovely curls, which are now gone, but I do have more body to the hair than I used to. This time last year I didn’t have a hair on my head, so this is progress I used to pay the hairdresser £45 every 6 weeks and it took a couple of hours… now I’m in and out in 20 minutes and it costs £12.50! Wow, what a saving… one of those ironic silver linings!!!
Hi there ladies its been ages since I have contributed but quite often read the threads. I too was worried about having my hair dyed. I was grey before chemo so knew it was pretty likely to be grey afterwards and somehow curly curly curly and grey just wasnt a look I felt happy with. Spoke to my hairdresser who used to colour my hair and she suggested a herbal colour from Holland and Barrett called Naturtint. (she is so good she acualy picks it up for me as she knows what shade she used to apply) I was told by my BC Nurse to avoid henna and that my next colour could be chemical, but it seems like everyone has an opinion and I have stuck to the herbal stuff. All I can say is that having my hair coloured and cut has given me the confidence to go out without my hat! I get compliments from well meaning peope who tell me how stylish and trendy I look. (I actually hate the texture)
