to shave or not to shave!!

Thanks janet!

My friends hairdresser told me to rub my scalp with olive oil and it would grow stronger, haven’t tried it yet though!

Hi all,

this thread has been so reassuring as I thought it was just my hair coming in grey/white. I’m delighted to learn that this may not be permanent. Thanks.

Hi all Just thought i would jump in and share my experience. Finished chemo in May hair started to come back grey, mid July took advice of nurse at radiotherapy unit who suggested an organic dye.I bought the one from Holland and Barrett a little lighter than my wig [this was an excellent match of my own admittedly dyed hair]. At this time my hair was about 2-3cm long well the finished article was KHAKI leaning toward green. It was really horrible I was so upset I wished I had just gone with the grey. My hair was such a mess and as it grew it became very tightly curled so I had to continue with wig during summer.in September a hairdresser friend of my son cut and bleached it for me and I have never had so many compliments.I thought I would never get over the loss of my shoulder length brown[RECITAL] hair, but the new funky blonde crop is great. take care kitty

Hi all

Kitty, that must have freaked you out, but glad you eventually got the funky blonde look!

Regards colouring - I waited for 6 months and almost to the day had my hairdresser colour/highlight as normal. My hair felt great afterwards and I’ve continued with this with no problems.

Debs hi! I’m well - finally had my reconstructive surgery at the Marsden on 29th Oct. Was in for a week and am now recovering at home and doing very well! Phew! Another hurdle out of the way. I’m pleased you’ve finished chemo and hope all is well with you. Enjoy watching your hair grow!!

To everyone whose hair is growing again … enjoy it! x

I knew mines would come back silver as I had started going grey in my early 20s and had been colouring since then, so about 22 years. I started uncovering it when it was the length of a crew cut, then it started getting curly. I started having it trimmed about 6 months after it started growing back and I used a Paul Mitchell blow dry gel to get rid of the curl. It eventually went after about 6 months and went back to being poker straight.

That was nearly 2 years ago now and I’ve never bothered to colour it. Mines settled into a really nice shade of silver and there are certain colours like purple that I can wear now that looked dreadful before when I was a coppery brown colour. I’ve been tempted to colour it a few times and all the guys at the hairdressers tell me not to. My OH loves it as well. I did say at the time that if it went all wiry and horrible I would dye it, but it’s baby fine and soft. I use violet coloured shampoo for silver hair and after I blow dry I use a Wella product call Pearl Smooth which gives it a subtle sparkle.

TBH, I always kept out of the sun, so at 48 I don’t have a lot of lines on my face. If I saw an old lady’s face looking back in the morning I’d probably book a colour, but everybody says I just look young but with silver hair. I don’t miss the tyranny of the 4 weekly roots showing either! There’s an American website called "Going Gray Looking Great with photos of loads of younger silver haired women and they look fab.

Yes my hairdresser also wanted a doctor’s letter in the first 6 months after my hair grew back before they would colour it.

I was keen to protect my new hair and not to damage it so I decided to wait a little longer.

I coloured it at home using a gentle water colour rinse. I waited until 11 months after it had fallen out before having it done professionally and by then they weren’t asking for a letter.

Good luck

Hi all, veggie hair dye arrived this morning and appointment booked for Friday afternoon with my hairdresser - soooo looking forward to ditching the wig (assuming the hair doesnt go green or something). Will let you know how it turns out xx Debbie xx

Post a piccie Debbie!! hope it goes well! love debs xxx

I am so glad i came across this thread!! I finished chemo in August and having rads start next week and was going to treat myself for christmas with a hair dye!! I can see i have probably been a bit hasty and will have to wait a lot longer!! Mine is grey like others and what with a dmx i feel a bit like a bloke and an old one at that!! Karen xx

Karen I havn’t seen many men as pretty as you!!! and you certainly don’t look old!!! What you like. I think we have to wait before we hit the hair dye and will just have to get used to the silver fox look for a while. never mind, at least we have hair!!!

Luv pauline x

Karen

Go easy on the dye, there is a post on here from a lady who used a veg dye and it came out khaki! Remember, I’ve seen you in the flesh and you are gorgeous!

I had my last chemo on 16th October (FEC) and am eagerly waiting for my hair to begin to grow again. However if anything I’m getting balder than I was during chemo and waking up to more bits of short hair on the pillow. Is this normal, and how long have people had to wait for hair to start to regrow after chemo finishes? Just wondering, as I’m beginning to feel as if I may be a baldy for life. I SO wanted to have a bit of hair by Christmas.

Guess what ladies…i went to visit work today for the first time WITHOUT wiggy!!! It was so scary but i am so glad i have done it. Everyone was fantastic, shocked but so kind. No going back now, wiggy is well and truly redundant. Feels so much better too.

A very relieved pauline xxx

well girls, I have had the veggie colour put on! Hairdresser nearly refused cos he liked the silver fox look but I insisted and this is the result. Felt a bit disappointed at first - in my head it was going to look longer once it was dark but getting more used to it as the evening goes on - well done Pauline for your dare to bare - I will decide in the morning whether the wig is binned for good. The color was really gentle and didnt have that strong smell and my hair feels really soft. Anyway onwards and upwards, another step forward eh? Love to all xDebbieX

Well done Pauline for going naked!!! Feels great does it not! I have gone bald most of the time and i can feel quite proud of myself at times, quite liberating actually!! That photo is a bit old now i will have to put up a new one, thank you both for your comments!! I went to my boys parents evening tonight and i actually put eye makeup on for the first time in months and i treated myself to some new jewellery when i went to the hospital yesterday - cant dye hair can spend money other things tho’!! My birthday is in march and so i have decided the distinquished silver look will stay until then - and in my 42 year will decided what colour i want to be - what fun!! Karen xx

Hi ScottieDog

Don’t panic just yet! About a month after chemo finished for me, my eyebrows and eyelashes fell out again. They started coming back in after I finished the Epi part of EpiCMF and they were back and normal. Then whump, out they all came apart from the very newest ones. Guess the chemo build up was just too much for the rest of them. It took about another 3 weeks for them to stabilise and get back to normal growth.

Could be a similar thing with your hair. Stay cool about it. I’m sure it’ll work out over the next few weeks. My own hair started coming back during CMF, but it took about 4 weeks after the last epi for me to know that it was growing, ie stubbly (and it was patchy at first). So seeing as you are at that 4 week stage now, it should start, once it’s got over this wee tizz that it’s having. It might be slow growing at the start but it’ll pick up.

Went to school/work with my new look today and got a great reaction. Some of the special needs kids were unsure and giggly and some just didnt recognise me at all! LOL I am so glad I ditched the wig - there is no going back now but it is indeed liberating as you other brave ladies have found! Best wishes, debbie x

hi Debbie, your hair looks fab! how long has that taken to grow?
i bet you feel so confident now?
take care
anna

thanks anna - had my last FEC chemo on 13th August and at that point did not have a hair on my head! It started coming back really quickly - it was almost like my body knew that was the last one and I started sprouting after a week or so! It really feels like a huge step back to normality and I wish everyone well with their cultivation! x Debbie x

wow! thats cool! i am on 3rd docetaxel after EC and so mine is growing, milimetres but growing! hopefully another 2 months mine will be looking that good.
take care
