Hello,
I’ve been on Tomoxifen for 6 weeks and have a few side effects already but the worst is vaginal soreness. Which turned into cystitis.
I’m very sore and not sleeping well.
Do I need to see my doctor for cream?
I have bought CanesOasis for cystitis but what to use for topical relief ?
Hi nutmeg1,
Thanks for posting.
Vaginal soreness is a common side effect that many women taking hormonal therapy experience. Oestrogen works to keep the tissue inside the vagina moist and elastic, so when the hormone is blocked by medicines like tamoxifen, the vagina and vulva can become dry and less supple, causing pain, soreness and discomfort. There can be a link between vaginal dryness and UTIs due to the thinning of the tissues and the lack of oestrogen in the cells to help fight harmful bacteria.
Vaginal dryness and irritation can be very distressing and difficult to talk about. If it’s not treated vaginal dryness can get worse, so it’s important to get help if you need it.
There are a variety of non-hormonal treatments that can help with vaginal dryness, including vaginal moisturisers and lubricants.
Some specialists will consider prescribing hormone treatments that are applied directly to the vagina (topical or vaginal oestrogen). These include oestrogen pessaries, creams or a ring. As you’re taking tamoxifen, your treatment team may be able to prescribe vaginal oestrogen.
You mention you are taking CanesOasis to help with the cystitis. I wonder if you have told your GP about your symptoms, they can assess you and discuss what may best help. You also mention you are having trouble sleeping, which can be a side effect of tamoxifen. It may also be helpful to talk to your treatment team, breast care nurse or GP about your side effects as they can also suggest what can help. Some women find their side effects improve when using a different brand of hormone therapy.
