Hi just wondering if anyone has had a tooth extracted after being on IV Zometa, Im bit concerned about ONJ, any advice from anyone whose gone through this?
Hi Cara
ive not had an extraction (yet) but I do have a loose tooth, which I’ve had for years and does play on my mind. But I do know someone who has, and she was started on antibiotics before the extraction and meticulous oral hygiene afterwards. She healed up well, but it took several weeks - hence the measures to prevent infection.
Hi Cara , I have had 2 teeth extracted after 4 zometa infusions .Both healed ok , had antibiotics. I was warned of jaw necrosis. Had dental checks before starting zometa. Dentist gave all clear but teeth became loose after starting letrozole and zometa . Infusions now stopped due to dental issues . Hopefully you will be ok . It’s such a worry x
I’ve been told to have a dental check before every infusion and if work is needed then I would need antibiotic cover and possibly a delay to the infusion
Hi Cara247 I also had zometa infusion then had teeth problems, one broken in half while eating a biscuit, I had emergency dental procedure at dental hospital, they were so good as I was mega anxious with all the other treatments chemo I really thought I was gonna lose all my teeth but honestly it was fine it is quite common and now everything is back to normal , good luck sweetheart and speedy recovery XXXX ![]()
Hi Cara speak to you’re breast care nurse or Oncologist before having a tooth extraction.
I had a useless dentist who said it would be okay to have a tooth extraction, even when I told him I was on Denosumab injections monthly.
Four months later I had problems with the tooth socket not healing.
I changed dentist & he referred me to the Oral Maxilla Consultant.
I’ve been with this Consultant for over a year, necrosis of my jaw bone was diagnosed & I visit him on a regular basis to have debribment of the sharp dead jaw bone poking through, I had my targeted therapy medication & the Denosumab injection stopped for four months hoping it would heal but unfortunately not.
I’m now back on the Denosumab that caused my problem because the Oncologist said it’s beneficial for the metastasis in my bones.
This is now an on going situation for me so please take advice, I wouldn’t like it to happen to anyone else.X
Yes, I have. Had to have a tooth out 2 years when I’d already had 6 zometa infusions. I’ve just had my 10th and probably last. No problems at all. It is scary and they have to tell you the risks, but they’re very low. I had the extraction at the hospital and the dentist offered antibiotics as a ‘just in case’ which I accepted.
Hope all goes well for you.
