I have secondaries in bones and liver and was dx in 2007, i am currently very well but i do take an array of pain meds. I want to go to nieces wedding in Canada next month. Does anyone have any suggestions of insurance providers who may help? Pink and Mia travel have already turned me down. please help as I dont want to miss big family get together but I am not rich.
Hi Jayne
I will follow this thread with interest, as I too have secondaries and very much want to see more of the world while I can! I have been invited to stay with friends in the south of France in August and am likely to be having a hip replacement soon, I mentioned the trip to the consultant and she said in her opinion it will be good for me (a week relaxing by the pool, with my friends waiting on me…what could be better recovery?)but she said an insurance company are unlikely to touch me! I have also heard that you can’t be insured within 2 months of any hospital stay…I seem to permanently have appts and treatments!..can’t see insurance happening.
Has anyone got any suggestions, or does anybody travel without insurance? For the past 3 years I have had insurance with Direct Line, but I have to be exempt from any condition related to Breast Cancer, previously I thought this was enough but having bone mets now,I realise that I am at higher risk of fractures, so don’t think I should travel without insurance anymore.
As I am about to reduce my working hours I can’t afford increased premiums…and even if I could, would be VERY reluctant to pay them!
would also be interested in others’ experiences

Hi Jayne, I am insured with Axa and took out a yearly one but does have exclusion clauses for my illness, bone mets. It did NOT cost a lot of money. I also carry the new card that replaces the old E11. (I cannot remember what card is called). But I only travel in Europe. Because I am on morphine I also have a letter for my GP which states that I have an illness which requires me to carry these drugs.( I have MST and Oromorph plus other painkillers. I have used the same letter for 11 years and keep in in my pill box whenever I am travelling. No-one has ever asked to see it to date, but it is required especially if you travel in an aeroplane. Best wishes Val
Thanks everyone. Nicky I have always found Mia online very helpful in Europe. It is just cos I want to go to N America I am having these probs now. Hope you get to enjoy your hol it sounds lovely.
I am also on Morphine so will take your advice re letter thanks Val.
Hope everyone has a good summer
Try Bromley Travel Insurance
bromley-insurance.co.uk/breast-cancer-travel-insurance.html
They offer a policy with cover for breast cancer that appears to only require a declaration from your consultant or BCN that you are fit to travel and one from you confirming that you do not anticipate requiring any treatment during your trip.

I agree with Fionam insurancewith.com are worth a try I beleive they cover people with secondaries and will also cover USA and Canada for people with secondaries.

I am using staysure.com ,but I think they specialise in over 50’s . Within Europe of course the new euopean health card will cover you for all emergency treatment , but it won’t repatriate you .
I know people here in Spain who have had heart operations on the card because it was classed as an emergency .
It is a worry once you’ve been dx , and especially for you going outside of europe.
Good luck

Hi
I travelled to USA last year and got insurance with Mia (I have bone mets) but I’ve also read on here earlier this year that they seemed to have stopped insuring for mets - or this may be because of any medication you are on? It’s a shame because they were quite cheap. The only thing not covered was cancellation due to my condition and only insuring so many weeks ahead so I’m not sure if this meant you couldn’t get cover? As to Europe I use the EHIC card for medical conditions and have other travel insurance for delays/baggage loss etc. I would take additional insurance out if I was, say ski-ing, but for a general holiday I would have to be treated as any EU citizen, whether I had mets or not. I agree that re patriation isn’t covered but unless my mets were the actual cause rather than for any other reason my general travel insurance would cover me. I will check out the links here for later in the year though as I want to travel outside of the EU and extra insurance will be needed.

Hi ladies,
It is worth trying medicitravel.com
Telephone them if you don’t want to complete the online forms, especially if there is something you are not sure about. 01243534435.
They are specialists in pre-existing conditions.

I have just called medicitravel and they wont ensure me as I have secondaries.
Mia online have changed insurers and will not cover cancer.
Has anyone got any other insurance companies that they know cover cancer and secondary cancer.
Thanks
Dawn
Hi Dawn,
I don’t know about secondary cancer but my best quote to fully cover both my breast cancer and hypertension (high blood pressure) was fron Able 2 Travel (just google them for their number.)
You cannnot get a quote online with them, you have to go through the telephone health screening.
I spent 2 days recently trawling insurance companies and received some ridiculously high quotes before settling with these.
I wish you lots of luck Dawn x
I don’t know about secondaries either but I found Freedom of Cambridge best bet for me 18mths after initial diagnosis. You have to ring them tho - no online service for anyone complicated!!
INSURANCE COMPANIES
MIA ONLINE (This Company has very good feedback, but I think you do have to ring them) Tel: Operations 01268 783383 – Head Office – 01268 782745
INSURANCE WITH (Also very good feedback)
You have to phone them even though there is a questionnaire online 08448262707 and quote IFT Health
FREE SPIRIT (Have to phone them 08452305000)
ALL CLEAR PLUS – You can get a quote online but I found the premium to be very high. The phone number is 08452505200
FREEDOM TRAVEL – You have to phone them – 01223 454290
IT’S SO EASY – You have to phone them – 08452224205
INSURANCE CHOICE - These people rang me back without being requested. The agents name was Lily and her direct line is 08445577428. She gave me a quote of £250.00 for a European trip to various destinations for 2 weeks. This covered absolutely everything including repatriation if necessary. I was impressed with her efficiency and the trouble she took.
GETMY.COM – They will give you a quote on line, but when I did it, they excluded Breast Cancer cover. However, I understand that a lot of people use this site as it’s very cheap. I personally wouldn’t recommend it. Tel: 08445577624
EHICPLUS – They will give a quote online, but you need a EHIC card which you can apply for online. I have done this for my husband and myself and it’s very straightforward. Tel: 08450555222 There is good feedback on this.
STAYSURE.CO.UK – They cover almost anything, but if it’s cancer related you have to phone them on 08442770844
INSUREPINK.COM – Tel 08000223213 – (I have not seen very good feedback on this company, but it might be worth giving them a call)
MARKS & SPENCER – They have given me a quote online which was very reasonable, it says it covers my existing medical condition, but they asked for very few details, so I’m not convinced. Tel 0800731244
There is also Bromley Insurance – 01282416050, Vital Health Travel Insurance – 08458035434 and Insure Cancer – 01252780190 – but I haven’t checked any of these out yet.
HI LADIES, JUST COME ONTO THIS THREAD AND THOUGHT I WOULD COPY AND PASTE THIS FOR YOU. I DID THIS A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO FOR MY ONCOLOGIST (HIS SECRETARY WAS TOO BUSY!!!) NOW THEY USE IT AT THE HOSPITAL TO HAND OUT TO OTHER PATIENTS SO I HOPE IT’S OF SOME HELP TO YOU ALL. TAKE CARE, LOTS OF LOVE, DIANNE X X X
Hi,
Just to add briefly, Miaonline will still insure those with secondaries Dawn. I saw your post and was worried as I have used them a few times before and found it’s excellent cover, so I emailed them and they said they will still cover those with 2ndries (I specifically asked about bc mets) but cannot guarantee cover as it depends on what treatment you are on and, most importantly, where you are going. Their reply is below:
“As always, there are some destinations that dependant on medical status of the client we would not be able to cover e.g. USA (because of flight duration and cost) or Greece (because of inadequate medical facilities). However, the main reason for obtaining this insurance was to allow people with severe medical histories and that of course includes secondary’s to be able to travel at affordable prices. We would suggest that you give us a call before booking anything, so that we can ensure that where you have chosen will be OK e.g. the medical facilities are adequate etc.”
Hope this helps.
Liz
Have just posted on another thread that Bromley will cover secondaries if your onc will sign a Fitness to Travel declaration that states
" … is not suffering from any ongoing conditions or complications that would restrict them from taking their proposed holiday". I have just got cover with no questions asked - my onc was fine with the declaration as my met is stable and I can arrange my IV treatment around the holiday. You also have to declare that you do not anticipate requiring treatment during the period of cover. Hope that helps. finty xx
