We are travelling to Australia in October and want to take out travel insurance now in case of cancellation. I lost money on a holiday when I was diagnosed because we didnt take out insurance when booking. I have had a quote from post office and they want an extra £128 for me! Has anyone found an insurance company that specialises with breast cancer survivors?

Hi Jo

If you type in ‘travel insurance’ into the ‘search’ facility at the top of this page you will be able to read previous threads on this topic containing a wealth of information.

Hi Jo

Try Marrs Insurance. If you are not actively in treatment, the quotes are very reasonable. Last time we went away the quote was about £36 for me and my partner for 11 days in Portugal.

Regards Wendy

I’ve just insured with Simple Travel Insurance and am covered for my DCIS at no extra charge. We have an annual policy worldwide for the 2 of us for under £80. I had to be medically screened and say that there was no progression of the condition.

I had an appointment with Barclays Bank yesterday about my account and they said I would have no problems getting insurance with them at a competitive rate.

I have been insured by Aberdeen Insurance twice, last week for a 5 day trip to USA, BC and 2 other complaints covered, £1000 excess, last weeks cost me £32. 65

Telephone number 01204375537. Quite a few people on this forum have used Aberdeen, good luck

Thanks every one, has given me a good idea of whats what

I’ve just got insurance for me and my husband for a week in Austria for £38 from InsurePink.

I HAVE JUST GOT INSURANCE WITH ABERDEEN INSURANCE FOR A FAMILY OF 4 FOR £37.WE GO TO SPAIN IN AUGUST FOR 13 DAYS.AT THE MOMENT KIDS GO FREE.THE ONLY CLAUSE IS IF I NEED TO MAKE A CLAIM FOR MY BREAST CANCER WHILST AWAY THERE IS A £250 EXCESS

I have recently taken out a worldwide annual policy with Aberdeen insurance for my husband and i for £ 65, that is my breast cancer covered with an excess of £ 750 and most other standard excess of £ 65, i phone one day and received my policy the next. My treatment finished on end of Sept 07. i also found them to be very easy to talk to.

Well this has got me reading my insurance policy for when we go in July to Lanzarote. I got two weeks with the AA for my family for £49. But reading into this policy it states: Declared Medical Conditions
IMPORTANT Cover for the following conditions has been included/excluded as indicated. Undeclared pre-existing medical conditions (see definition in Policy document) are not covered.
My Name Breast Cancer (Malignancy - Breast) EXCLUDED

So does this mean I’m not covered for Breast cancer or injuries as a result of having breast cancer? I mean I’m not suddenly going to suffer am I… Does this sound about right? Anyone?
Vanessa

Had you declared that you’ve had breast cancer? I think if you have then you should have no problems - it’s when they haven’t been informed.

I would also think about whether you actually need your ‘breast cancer’ covering because while I was a ‘primary’ lady I used to have it as declared but not covered because my thinking was ‘what was I going to become ill with that would necessitate emergency treatment whilst on holiday?’. Things are now a bit different as I’ve got secondaries so need to have cover in case I do become ill or need to be brought back home quickly.

It might be an idea to talk to your breast care nurse to see whether they think there’s any risk to you but you should still declare that you’ve had breast cancer even though you might want it excluding. If that makes sense!

Yes I did declare I have breast cancer and I also had to declare I am taking prescribed medication (tamoxifen). Thanks Pinkdove I think its the ususual cover but without any treatment I might need if I suddenly became ill because of breast cancer which of course is not going to happen is it.
thanks Vanessa

Hi Vanessa

I went on holiday for 10 years (both summer holidays and ski-ing hols) with b.c. as an exclusion and never had any problems so unless your breast care nurse thinks you definitely should be covered then I’d leave it as it is.

Enjoy your hols!!! We could do with a bit of the sun here!

Pinkdove

The only problem is that you wouldn’t be covered if you had to cancel because of BC. I have declared my BC to my insurance company and they have excluded it from my cover which is ok for last minute bookings but if I want to book a an expensive holiday in advance, I wouldn’t like to take the chance.

All the best
Anne

I think you have to weigh up what exactly will you become ill with relating to primary breast cancer if your treatment finished a while back? I can understand ladies who have recently finished their treatment feeling vulnerable and probably wanting to be covered.

Pinkdove

After my primary treatmen I did feel I couldn’t travel to US without insurance cover. The unlikely but possible scenarios I envisaged were falling over, breaking a bone because of bone mets or collapsing suddenly with brain mets. I never felt I could risk going to US without cover…Europe feels different.

I think you do feel vulnerable immediately after treatment.

Anyone know if Aberdeen are still doing good deals? I have regional recurrence, active cancer, in tretament and would love to go to US in May/June.

Jane

Hi everyone
Aberdeen are still coming up trumps for us BC ladies. I took annual worldwide insurance with them last year for myself and hubby for £55 with £500 excess if I had any treatment for my BC whilst on holiday. Since then we have travelled to the USA twice and Dubai without any problems whatsoever. We will be renewing with Aberdeen again this year.

Good Luck x
Lorraine

Good to know that Aberdeen are still covering us.

I definitely wouldn’t go without insurance now that I’ve got mets especially as it’s in my spine and, like Jane says, the fear of falling over and damaging my back is always on my mind when I’m away. I never felt the need before the mets to have cover for my breast cancer although I think the USA is a different kettle of fish because of their healthcare and how expensive it is.

My oncologist has advised me to have cover even for Europe because of the risk with my spine - but will consider Aberdeen as they might give me cover for a year.
