I have had bi-lateral mastectomy and reconstruction with inferior dermal flaps on 28th August 2012 because of family history .
My friend wants to take me away on holiday middle of October for a week in the sun relaxing does anyone know if it will be safe to fly.
Im getting there slowly only on pain killers now taking each day at a time .
Id appreciate any answers anyone has and if anyone needs to ask about my surgery as they may be about to have the same please feel free

Hi Discoqueen,i was told not to fly for 4wks after surgery, not sure if its the standard for all surgery tho, best to ring helpline and doublecheck, wish I had as good a friend as that!!!enjoy the hol,

I would check with your surgeon or GP but normally if your mobility is reduced they arent keen on you flying because of the risks of blood clots, but i would have thought end of aug to mid oct should be long enough as long as you have fully healed. And you will normally have to inform your insurer you have had surgery within the last 12 months.
enjoy your holiday
There is a very good Macmillan booklet that deals with this question. Apparently even if you are medically fit to travel the insurance costs can be huge. There is a page in the booklet that lists the countries with reciprocal health care agreements with the UK, and it says that insurance to go to those countries can be a lot cheaper. Obviously the EU is OK, but in October if you want sun… some of the Caribbean islands are also on the list.
It also has a list of the companies that will insure cancer patients and their contact details.
It is called Travel And Cancer. Very hard to find on their website. The link above *might* work or you can call them on 08088080000. I picked up a copy in their centre in my hospital’s reception.
