I’m thinking of moving down to Norfolk and wondering if anyone has any experience of hospitals in the area. Have you had decent treatment in Norwich - what are the consultants/plastic surgeons etc like down there? Any advice would be MUCH appreciated (in case the dreaded cancer returns…).
Thanks!

Hello!!
I live near Norwich and the care at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has been very very good. All the consultants I have seen for breast surgery, oncology and plastic surgery have been very helpful, forthright and extremely knowledgable. The hospital is only 6 years old and is a very ‘nice’ one if such a thing exists.
The plastic surgery team are great, they have a dedicated Reconstruction nurse and of course Elaine Sassoon who has an excellent reputation. We also have Keeping Abreast (which I help to run) for ladies who are scheduled for or contemplating reconstruction.
It is is really nice part of the world to live in, and not all farming and turkeys!!!
If you need any more info - let me know!!!
Love

Dear Ali,
Thanks so much for replying. It’s good to know there is decent care as that was my one fear about moving! Do you know if there are any private hospitals/consultants in Norwich? I was misdiagnosed up here and it was only when I went to see a private consultant that the cancer was discovered. I also tend to go occasionally for private consultations for the odd thing to save time- things like flu jabs or whatever.
I’d really appreciate any info you have.
Many thanks again

Hi,
I live in Norwich and was diagnosed in April at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH). BC was my first experience of serious illness and I have no complaints with the treatment I’ve received. The breast clinic is VERY busy and appointment times run late, but staff seem thorough. There is a team of breast care nurses you can contact between appointments. As Ali has mentioned above, Norwich has a good reputation for reconstructions. Also, on site is the Big C centre - run by a local charity providing info, advice, complementary therapies. a friendly welcome etc.
There is a BUPA hospital here (1 mile from NNUH) but I have no experience of private health care to make a comment.
Best Regards
Misha
Hi,
I had my treatment at the Norwich Bupa now called Spire- private hospital. It is just down the road from the NNUH. The hospital is good and i had my mastectomy and ac there. My breast reconstruction was done at the NNUH but privately, as they have the more expensive equipment needed for the microsurgury. My RT was also done at the NNUH My breast surgeon, Simon Pain is great and Elaine Sassoon and her department are excellent.
Let me know if you want further details.
Thanks so much. Really appreciate it.

Hi Flaxhigh
I was DX in May 07 and had all my treatment at the NNUH. Everyone was very helpful and kind and I had no complaints at all. My onc is lovely and I am now back in the care of my surgeon.
The BigC Centre for me has been an enormous help and I still go in now if I have got an appt at the hospital. I am trying to get to the bottom of what my BCN, GP and Practice Nurse think is a breast lymphoedema but am still waiting for a referral which is a bit frustrating. I am back there in a couple of weeks so hopefully will get somewhere with it then.
Misha - Have you been into the centre, you said you were going to on your next visit.
Have any of you ladies joined the Norwich Younger Womans Group. I have been to one meeting and was hoping to go to the July meet but unfortunately I can’t now. If you are interested your BCN will have the contact details. There is normally a meeting once a month. If anyone would like the details of the July meet and can PM them to you.

I have just seen that Bestie has signed herself Ali, if that is short for Alison I think that makes 3 of us from Norwich, how weird is that!!!
HI just to add i have had all my treatment at Norwich, ( still having it ) My surgeon was Mr. Pain as well, he is really lovely, gives you all the time you need to ask questions. Now about to start rads, they have an evening when you can go up and be shown around the unit and explainn whats going to happen. Plus Norwich and surrounding areas are lovely.

Hi girls,
Thanks for that. Not sure when exactly we are heading to Norfolk - need to sell our house first! - but feel really reassured that if the dreaded BC comes back then there is good treatment and even a younger women’s group too.
So many thanks and maybe see you one day at the group!

I’ve been treated by both the James Paget in Gorleston (Gt Yarmouth) and the N&N. Both have been absolutely marvelous and I cannot fault them.

Hi
Had mastectomy and reconstruction done in Norwich (not private) and all treatment and aftercare was fantastic. The PS surgeons are the best in the country!
Norfolk is a wonderful place to live!
