Tubular / Ductual

Hi, hoping someone can advise,
Whats the difference between Invasive Tubular Cancer (in my right breast) and invasive ductual cancer ( in my left breast).
My doc said 0.7% chance of having cancer in both breasts.
Thank yoy

Sorry to hear of you diagnosis .
Ductal carcinoma starts in the milk ducts as DCIS ( ductal carcinoma in situ ) then starts to invade surrounding breast tissue at which point it becomes invasive ductal carcinoma and is one of the commoner kinds of breast cancer . I don’t know much about it really but lots of people on here are being treated for it and someone who knows more about it will probably reply .
My cancer was actually tubular which is called that because of how it grows in tiny tube shapes or tubules and starts within the breast tissue often the upper outer quarter as mine did. I was told that it’s a very rare form of BC - about 2% , very low grade and slow growing and though it does invade surrounding breast tissue it very rarely spreads outside of the breast. It’s almost always ER and PR + and HER2- which mine was . I’m not sure if you’re aware of what that means yet but if they have been able to confirm the type of cancer I would have thought they should know your ER / PR status by now for both cancers though the HER2 test takes longer to come back I believe.

Quite a few people on here do seem to have BC in both breasts but that’s probably a very tiny percentage of the total number of people who have BC and I’m sure it must be rarer to have two different types at once so your doctor may be right about the 0.7%.

If you want more facts and explanation it’s probably best to speak to the experts at this point. If you’re in the UK then ask your BCN to go over it with you . You could also try the helpline on 0808 800 6000 from 8am tomorrow and the Nurses will be able to give you more information .

With best wishes and hoping this was of some help.

Thanks, I really appreciate your response. Mine are ER positive and HER2 neg.
The letter i have isnt clear as it says the 2 areas on the right breast are both “invasive tubular cancer” one of which also has “+ intermediate DCIS”
If DCIS becomes IDC, then does that mean that it could become both types in the same breast? Im a little confused.
I will ask my BCN, i only rang her the other day and didnt want to bombard her as im sure she’s super busy,
How is your treatment plan going?
X

Yes that does sound confusing and if you don’t want to ring your BCN so soon maybe you could ring the helpline here and ask them to go through it with you. I’m not sure but I think it’s perfectly possible to have 2 types in one breast. Maybe you could get someone to clarify with you if cancer that starts in the ducts can be tubular - I’m afraid I don’t know. At least they are all ER + and no complications with being HER2+ as well as some people end up having the treatment for both .

I’m ok thanks my treatment finished 2 years ago . I keep thinking that I will come off this site at some point but if I can help someone else then I’m happy to do it and honestly it helps me to keep things in perspective . I occasionally read my old posts back as I get alerts when someone has read them and I can see how angry I was at one point and how far I have come in the last 2 years .

I hope you get some clarity and that everything goes as well for you as possible . Xx

Thanks, that’s good to hear that you are all through your treatment. Hope it wasn’t too harrowing. It must be a relief to be through the other side.
I’ve found reading through posts on this forum to be really helpful. It’s good to read the stories and opinions on here. Thank you for taking the time to help everyone. It is so very kind, and if you get something from it to, then that’s great!
I will give the helpline a call,
Thank you x
