Tumour Biopsies

As my child’s mind is engaged as I wait for cancer confirmation, my child’s mind is wondering a ‘stupid’ question… Can the same breast with multiple tumours be different cancers eg. A tumour hr&er positive with a different tumour triple negative?

I don’t think it is a stupid question at all. In fact it seems a perfectly normal thing to wonder if you have had several lumps biopsied.

Obviously I am not one of the nurses so I don’t have the statistics to hand, but I understand that you can sometimes get more than one type of breast cancer appearing at the same time. It is quite rare though. More commonly people get the same type in more than on location within the breast.

The nurses will be along later with more information. Wishing you all the best.

Hi @Za

It’s not a silly question at all.

My biopsies showed that I had invasive lobular cancer plus ductal carcinoma in situ AND lobular carcinoma in situ all in the same breast (right). It was multifocal, which means in the same quadrant of the breast, and I had a mastectomy plus full lymph node removal.

Wishing you all the very best xx

Completely logical question which you are absolutely right to ask. I do not know the answer but wish you good luck.

My goodness, that is what you might term a full house. I hope you are doing okay.

Not a silly question, it is all very complicated! I had several types and grades in one breast.
Good luck with your treatment

Perfectly reasonable question, @Za. I had a Grade 2 IDC and following surgery two more little Grade 1s were found plus a bit of intermediate DCIS for good measure. Although they were all ER+/HER- the ones of different grades were separate/different cancers.

Hi Za,

Thanks for posting.

It can be an anxious time waiting for results to confirm a cancer diagnosis and as @scientistamafier says, your question is not a stupid one.

At times like this, it can help to talk to someone about how you are feeling and ask questions. You are very welcome to call our helpline if you would like to talk things through. The helpline team have time to listen and signpost you to additional support and information if necessary.

Sometimes more than one area of breast cancer is found in the breast. If the cancers are in the same quarter of the breast (multi-focal) it is more likely that they are the same type of cancer. If the cancers are in different quarters of the breast (multi-centric) it’s possible these may have different features including the hormone receptors (ER) as @laneycass has experienced.

If your results do confirm a breast cancer diagnosis, your treatment team will discuss what the best treatment for you will be.

As mentioned above, please do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK -prefix 18001).

If you would prefer one of our nurses to call you. Please complete this form ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Our usual opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday.

Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes
