Hi all
Has anyone completed this ?
I happened to watch a Zoe video yesterday about breast cancer risks, with Dr Thais Aliabadi, she is Olivia Munn’s Dr and also had breast cancer. She was really stressing everyone should complete this simple assessment, the Tyrer Cuzik tool. I think after a clear mammogram, clear ultrasound and clear genetic test Olivia completed the risk tool and it came back high risk of developing breast cancer. She had an MRI which should very early aggressive cancer!
I attempted to complete it, takes literally a minute, wasn’t too sure about the biopsy status to click for DCIS, but it came back High Risk (note my mum died of BC at 59) I’m 50, due a lumpectomy in 2 weeks for small DCIS, now I’m getting twitchy!
As far as I can see it doesn’t really offer anything new up. It goes through known risk factors. When my mother had it, I knew that it put me at higher risk. I remember looking at her risk factors at the time - 18 years ago now- noting that she only had 1 factor on the list whereas I had quite a few, so unsurprised that I got it really. The good thing though is that she’s 81 now with no signs of recurance.
I won’t be doing it. Firstly, I’ve had BC so kinda know I had a high risk! I got through the treatment and am now in the headspace that if it comes back or I get a new, different variety, I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. Secondly, I’m not sure how much confidence to put into these statistical-based tools and thirdly, if you get an unfavourable result, you can live your life in fear even though it may never happen. I listened to that podcast and wasn’t massively impressed by her to be honest although I applaud her insistence that we have to be our advocate.
Looking at it briefly I think the fact we’ve had breast cancer puts us in the high risk group anyway…. But we know that already.
