Ultrasound birads 5 and pregnant

Hello all,

I had an ultrasound done for a lump I have felt for a few months on my breast and midwife referred me for it to get looked into. The radiologist said there was a 7mm irregular mass that was highly suspicious of malignancy and was a birads grade 5. They have me scheduled for a core needle biopsy next week (obviously the wait is not fun…at all!).

I am also 7 months pregnant so the wait and stress of the unknown is killing me.

Anyone else have a birads 5 mass and it turned out to be nothing. From what I’ve read it’s 95% chance it’s cancer but my midwife is hoping it’s a wrong diagnosis as she said it just didn’t feel like a cancerous lump to her. I’m hoping she’s right, but obviously wanna be prepared for the bad news.

My mother in law was just diagnosed with breast cancer LAST WEEK so it’s crazy to have gotten this ultrasound result the same time frame. Hers was birads 4b…so I think that’s what has me a little more panicked. Hopefully everything will work out but the thought of all of this while pregnant (and I have 4 kiddos ages 1, 3, 9 and 11) make it a little overwhelming.

Hiyer Erika,

I’m really sorry nobody has yet replied to your post, I don’t have experience of the situation you are in - but my word - the stress must be unbearable for you being 7 months pregnant and with 4 other children to care for ! Its a truly awful place you find yourself right now.

I’m glad at least they have quickly arranged the biopsy, as only that result will give you the answers you so desperately need. You will find stories online and on here too to be honest, of Birads levels turning out to be incorrect once the biopsy results are in, but I will say that knowing that won’t help you to feel more relaxed about things at this point as you are also aware of the high chances that it could be a malignant mass. Its natural, and human, to want to have the answer as the uncertainty is a very painful place to be - I can only sympathise and send best wishes for you to remain as calm as is possible in your third trimester. I think its important to be honest with yourself, and recognise that a radiographer saying ‘highly suspicious’ and it being Birad 5, would mean they are relatively sure of the imaging markers to give that rating. It would be fantastic if this biopsy proves there are no malignant cells, but you are right to be prepared as being prepared is better than pinning all your hopes on being in that small percentage where the radiographer isn’t right.

I’m sure your midwife will be very supportive if this turns out to be a form of BC and you will certainly not be the alone in having it during pregnancy, there have been posts on here before. You would get very careful and considered treatment at this late stage of your pregnancy and the aim would be to keep you and the baby healthy, and possibly have some treatments delayed if they were necessary. I know its a lot to take in, and terribly frightening for you - have you got a support network around ? You can always ring the helpline number on this page if you just need to talk about your emotions and have questions - 08088006000.

Take care
