After finding a lump in my breast my dr ordered a mammogram and diagnostic ultrasound. My mother, grandmother, and great aunt all have battled breast cancer. When I went for my scheduled testing today, they took one look at my age and told me since I am under 30 there was no reason to have a mammogram done and they were just going to do the ultrasound. During the ultrasound the tech could feel the lump but could not get a clear view of it. She took the pictures she had of my breast to the radiologist and he said that I was good to go. Then proceeded to tell me that I am under 30 so I don’t really need to worry and that it is probably a balled up dense piece of tissue or a clogged milk duct since I am ten months postpartum. I tried explaining that I never breastfed, and that my mother’s breast cancer was in the milk duct. They brushed me off and told me I was fine even though they never got a clear view of the lump.
Is this normal? I felt very discouraged when I left.
