Hi I’m due to have an ultrasound of both breasts today at 4:30. I’m wondering what happens, will they tell me if everything is ok or if they see something there and then…or do I wait for an appointment? Not really sure what to expect. Thanks x

Hi ChiMummy,
Hope you see this in time! In general, if they can’t find anything, they’ll send you on your way. If something shows up, you may need some samples tested. These may be taken at the time, or you might need a further appointment.
You might have a fine needle aspiration, where fluid is drawn off with a very thin needle. You might need a core biopsy if there are any solid lumps. This uses a slightly thicker needle and takes a tiny piece of the matter away. Any biopsies will be sent for analysis, and you will get a further appointment to come back and discuss the results.
The tests may be a little uncomfortable, but not too bad. With a core biopsy, they give a little local anaesthetic to ease any pain.
The main thing is not to worry until you know what you’re dealing with. Most lumps turn out to be completely innocent.
Best of luck with your scan. Do let us know how you get on.
Love Mel. xxx
