Very worried - Do I have Inflammatory Breast Cancer?

Hello everyone, I am terrified to be here again…

Back in September 2011 after an US and mammogram I had a large lump taken out of my right breast (3.5 x 3 cm) which was above my nipple it turned out to be benign and consistent with a radial scar. I had a bit of lumpiness above the scar so I went back to see the surgeon a couple of weeks ago and he wasn’t worried about anything.

I have just been on holiday in Lanzarote and whilst I was there I noticed a real tenderness in my breast underneath the nipple. This morning I have seen a reddening about the size of a ten pence piece which is to the side of the nipple. About half the area around the nipple is very tender and swollen and warm.

I also have a real thickening/lump in the area where the original lump was taken. All this has happened in the space of 2/3 days and I am terrified it could be inflammatory breast cancer.

Please could anyone offer me any thoughts/advice. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance and best wishes to everyone for a happy and healthy 2012.

I think it is unlikely you have inflammatory breast cancer, but if it has come up that quickly, do you think you could have an infection there?

I think it would be appropriate to contact yor doctors out of hours service and get seen

Hi Ruth many thanks for your reply, and for your reassurance.

I did wonder if it could be an infection but I had read that IBC can come on very quickly. These symptoms have appeared in just 2 days and the mass if very tender to touch and is about 5 x 4 cm. I am hoping that it’s unlikely it could have grown so quickly in 2 days but can’t find much more info about it.

Thanks again for your kind reply I really appreciate it.

Best wishes to you

Hi hun,

I was diagnosed with IBC just 2 days ago, I think maybe you should pop to docs just to get it checked. Mine didn’t come on that quickly and I have aggresive IBC, Stage 3, mine took some time to get to the stage you describe but also as you have had surgery there before it may be as others have said, infection or maybe something to do with scar tissue. We are not docs so try not to worry yourself silly x

Much love

Hi Emma thanks so much for your reply. I am so sorry you’ve been diagnosed with IBC I do hope u r getting lots if support from everybody. Have they got a treatment plan for u? I guess mine could be an infection it’s just that my surgery was 3 months ago so I wouldn’t have expected to have an infection now.?
Do u mind me asking how much of the breast is red/tender if u do have IBC? Mine is to the side of my nipple and is about 3 cm x 2 cm.
Thanks ever so much for replying, thinking of u and wishing u well very soon. Take care, with love and prayers xx

Hi :O)

I am lucky that I have alot of support, my treatment plan is as follows: I start Chemo this week as the mas is too large to go straight in @12cm and has spread so I am currently staged at 3b…Full mastectomy all going well in afew months followed by Radiotherapy.I see my Onco on Wednesday and will know more of my plan then.
My whole breast is mahoosive but the redness is restricted to around my aereola and under my breast so quite large (I’m a 38C). No pain or tenderness as such.

If you are on facebook I have posted my blog above and today I have put pictures on there so people can see what I’m talking about…Yes I am flashing my boobs to all and sundry! lol!

I hope you get an answer from the docs, Like we say it’s better to get it checked.

Love,

Emma :O)

Hi Emma, firstly thank you very much for your reply and for your really honest and descriptive words, and also for doing your Facebook page, wow that is really brave and courageous and such a fantastic thing to do to help other people who may be worried whether they have it. It really helped me to compare what was going on with my breast, I feel very lucky as the redness has died down pretty much gone as has the tenderness and I did see my GP who thinks it’s mastitis. There is a bit of thickening but nothing like it was so I’m hoping it is just inflammation, GP has given me antibiotics too.

So how are you? How did the visit go with the Onco? I do hope you feel more in control now you know what your plan is, and I’m glad you have lots of support. Like you I have 3 children and the good thing is they will take your mind off a lot of what’s going on and keep you distracted, as hard work as they are!

Wishing you all the best over the next few weeks, I’m sure you’ll be absolutely fine and come out of this a stronger person than ever.

Love
