Hi All
I am part way through Fec chemotherapy for primary breast cancer and my bloods have shown low vitamin d levels. Has anyone else experienced this and do you know what it means as I am a bit worried?
Thanks and best wishes to all

Hi there Bookie
My vitamin D levels dropped during chemo …down to around 40… I was prescribed superstrength tablets to take for 2 months and now I take just one superstrenth one x one a month…this is alongside the daily vit D / calcium supplement i am prescribed ( adcal) …it took around a year before my levels were over 75 ( the lower normal range ) … maybe speak to your team? My oncology team didn’t seen overly concerned but were happy to prescribe…hope you get sorted soon…take good care
If you weren’t on a Vitamin D3 supplements before chemo the low level is probably something you’ve had for a while. It’s hugely common now because of the amount of sunscreen we use and the avoidance of the sun’s rays. It’s nothing you should worry about now I would think though. In fact my doctor wouldn’t let me take my Vitamin D3 supplement during chemo. I needed to wait until three weeks after I was done to start taking it again. But when you’re done they may prescribe you something for awhile to get it up quickly but if not you can just use an over the counter quality vitamin. I take 2000mg a day and have been taking it for about a decade now since a physical discovered my low vitamin D3 level. It takes awhile to get it up that way but it will rise some eventually. Having low vitamin D won’t kill you but it does effect the health of your immunity system and the absorption of calcium so when you’re done with treatment you’ll want to address it. But it can wait until then.
