hi there
is there a ist of vitamins etc from health shops that we shouldnt take if hormone +
i take primrose oil and codliver oil but would like to take a multi vit and mineral with prebiotics
thanks
I’m not sure about the hormone + side of things as I only take vit D and magnesium.
I would say that cod liver oil usually has a high dose of vit A and vit D so you would need to be careful about adding a multivitamin containing vit A + D on top of that.
Hi,
I saw my Surgeon for my post-active treatment check this Tuesday,(She seemed pleased with me, thank goodness) and as I am on Arimidex she suggested I take a high dose of cod liver oil capsules (for the Omega 3,and Vit D) to help keep my bones healthy. She said, quite rightly, we don’t get enough natural Vit D from the sun this time of year, especially in Scotland! Therefore I’ve started on one 1,000 strength capsule a day, and won’t take any more supplementary Vits, as she said it isn’t necessary.
Hope this helps,
Heather.x
Heather, I also take the 1000 strength Vit D. I wasn’t clear whether you are taking cod liver oil as well as this? If you are, how much Vit D are you taking per day in total?
I was actually taking just Omega 3, 1,000 strength (Tescos) as is Pure fish oil, and I thought that would include Vit D, but after your post I had a close look, and it doesn’t mention it, just EPA and DHA! Thanks for your query, as I shall now change over to the other capsules we’ve got, which are Cod liver Oil with Omega 3, and they definitely have Vits A and D. The strength is 5µg,and the dosage is 1 or 2 capsules a day. That seems a small amount to what you’re taking, but I’ve googled Vit D and cannot find an RDA for it, so it seems like I could take a much higher dose than I am! Pity my Surgeon didn’t specify, other than “high dose of cod liver oil”!
When the snow allows I will be shopping for better capsules than I’ve got!

Hi Heather
I am taking a high dose of 1000 IU. You may be interested in this article on the subject:

(You shouldn’t need to register to see this but if you do it is free).
If you speak to your surgeon and he/she does say what dose they recommend I’d be grateful if you’d let me know.
take care, elinda
Hi girls,
I am 2yrs since DX, 18months since MX and taking Tamoxifen. Im 58 so not surprisingly.I
m full of aches & pains so as well as the prescribed Adcal D3, I take cod-liver oil, glucosamine, a multi-vit
and because I read an article saying that survival rates were slightly higher with people who take Selenium and Co-enzyme Q10, I take those two as well, talk about shake rattle and roll. If Im doing myself any harm, you wouldn
t think so, I look and feel great.
Take care all, love Mags xx
Hi elinda,
Thank you, I was very interested in that article! I did have to register, but not a prob, and (as an ex-nurse) I feel I will use the site again, it looks good. It seems as if we should really have a Vit D blood test to see exactly what strength our particular needs are, but I won’t go down that path right now, as I am already a pin cushion! I’m having tests for my newly diagnosed hyperthyroidism, and my veins are still hard and patchworky from chemo, so will just try and speak to my Surgeon next week, which will be less painful.
I will post when I know what she recommends, and meantime I will take what I have got, on the supposition that some is definitely better than none! Thaks again,
Take care,
Heather.x
Hi Mags,
Mmm, glucosamine, I used to take that, guess I should do so again, as I am 64 now! I can’t believe i am so old, and yet Chemo was given to me because I am “young”! That was the highlight of my meeting with my Oncologist, as you can imagine!
Take care, and keep taking the tablets!
Love,
Heather.x
Heather I’m not even sure if they do that blood test in England. I will get around to asking one of these days. I didn’t really find that glucoasmine helped me although I did try for 6 months - the research evidence is not that great either. However, what doesn’t work for one may work for others so it’s trying things. I’ve no idea if the Vit D is doing me good but there’s enough evidence for me to want to keep taking it.
Dont know if its down to lazyness, inertia or stupidity but I’m not taking anything at all at the moment. So I read this thread with great interest.
Codliver oil seems like an essential. Any other must haves?
I was told to stay on Vitamin D for the rest of my life by my husband’s aunt who is an senior oncology nurse in Canada. She discussed with their Oncologist and senior breast care nurse.
If you subscribe free to the link I’ve attached you’ll get a lot more info.
As you may have read earlier in the thread, cod liver oil usually contains vit D although it may be a low dose.
