Hi. I’m 40 years old and experienced yellow discharge from my left nipple early April. Booked an appointment with my gp who found thickening of my left breast and referred to breast clinic, was seen within a week and consultant sent me for a mammogram same day. Fast forward 5 weeks and ive still not received my results yet hospital have put me on a waiting list on nhs app for breast surgery so im a little concerned. Ive tried ringing breast clinic but no answer.
Anyone else had their results take this long or been put on a waiting list. Says 8 weeks average waiting time x thank you for reading x
Hello Wendy,
This does seem a long wait, I’m wondering if you have been lost in the process, as you can’t get a reply from your breast cancer team, maybe call the radiology team to see if they can shed any light on this for you.
Hopefully you will get your plan of where you’re going very soon. You could will do without this extra stress and anxiety. I wish you well going forward. Please keep posting let us know how you’re getting on. We are all here for you.
Hugs Tili
Other route to follow would be to get in touch with your GP and ask them what’s going on, they should have received correspondence from the breast clinic . It’s wrong to get information about needing surgery but not be given the reasons for that .
Hi Tili.
I shall try those tomorrow, thank you. Yes it really is worrying me and doesnt help I suffer with severe anxiety aswell.
Yes I will keep you all updated and thank you
Hi Jill,
Thank you for replying x
I contacted my GP today and they havent received my results either and just advised me to keep ringing breast clinic in hope they will answer
Yes its worrying not knowing, doesnt help my mum had breast cancer 6 years ago and she waited 4 weeks for her mammogram results so im thinking worse
@wendy84 I would attend the breast clinic as they are failing in their duty under the 2 week wait on this, especially with the family history of BC.
When I went for my first mammograms, they were reviewed there and then. Everyone at the breast clinic, private or NHS, is reviewed immediately by a consultant radiologist.
It sounds like you’ve slipped through the net so I would just go there and explain the urgency and ask why you’ve not been contacted. If they won’t answer the phone then it leaves you no option.
Best of luck for you! X
Yes it was a thought ive had to be honest x I mostly have been forgotten about as our hospital is horrendous and have lost my notes and medication in past x
Thank you for your input x
@wendy84 do you realise that you can opt for any hospital you want? You don’t have to go to them? You have the absolute right to chose on the NHS xx
I wasnt aware i could choose for appointments but ill bear that in mind, thank you xx
So as Tili advised I rang radiologist this morning and well I have some answers sort of.
She explained that theres a delay in result letters being sent out however she is going to email the department to hurry up sending them.
As for being added to waiting list, apparently breast surgery is what they call the department I attended and she said it will be for a follow up appointment. I asked her does that mean they have found something and she said she can not say but if it was it would be small.
‘A delay in sending letters out?’ This isn’t an offer on Pizzas. Totally unacceptable. I suggest you storm the citadel and demand to be seen. Put pressure on through your GP and use the Friends service at your hospital. Then find out who the Head of Breast Cancer Care in your area is and get on the phone pronto. ‘Our NHS’ is totally dysfunctional and the only way to get anything out of them is to drive the process yourself. Don’t be fobbed off - their behaviour is outside all acceptable guidelines.
Hi @wendy84,
I’m so sorry this has happened to you, waiting for results is an anxious enough time without the added stress of radio silence. It’s completely expected that you would feel that way. You have received a lot of good advice already here, and hopefully have seen that our forum is a very welcoming place that will always do its best to offer support.
If in the meantime you need someone to speak to, you can reach our breast cancer nurses on 0808 800 6000. They are there to listen to any worries you have and answer any questions.
Hoping you get some answers soon,
Alice
Your hospital should have a PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) and should publicise its telephone number. Your hospital might be useless but the PALS usually can get things moving. You won’t be being a nuisance in asserting your rights here @wendy84, it is generally acknowledged by everyone on this forum that waiting for results is the worst part of the whole process. I think you have been very reasonable and patient to date. Time to ramp it up a bit.
After my first annual mammogram following diagnosis, the radiologist showed me the scans and told about breast density (mine aren’t very dense) and said it is protocol to have two doctors to review the results so I’d get a letter confirming nothing untoward seen once the second doctor had reviewed. No letter was ever received and, when I queried why, I was also told that there was a backlog but at least I had the expert talk me through it there and then. Poor you - get PALS involved!
@wendy84 Hi it took two weeks for my repeat mammogram and then two months for the first surgery. I would go to the breast cancer department with your letter and ask to talk to a breast nurse or consultant. I wish you all the best.
