waiting for mammogram

Hi everyone,
I have been looking on this site for a few weeks, well since i found a lump in my left breast. I went to my doctors straight away and was told to come back in a few weeks if it hadn’t gone. I then went back again to be told it seems larger and he would get me seen at the hospital. After another fortnight I was finally seen yesterday and had another examination. The consultant told me the lump was quite large at 2.5 cm’s, then said it might be a cyst, cancer or something else! Then told me that I wouldn’t be having anymore tests that day as their wasn’t anyone to do all the tests I needed (mammogram, ultra sound and an aspiration). He then said they would ring me today which they didn’t! so I rang them to be told They have made me an appointment for the 27th! another 10 days of waiting. I just want to know and get it over with. Does everyone have to wait this long?

Yes, it does seem a long wait. No doubt an anxious one. I too have an appointment for the 27th which seems ages away. I went to my doctor on the 14th last week with a lump in my breast and she referred me to the breast clinic that day. However the wait is nearly two weeks for the first appointment and that is so-called fast track! I have been calling the clinic regularly to see if there are any cancellations with the hope of bringing my appointment forwards. Maybe you could try that. They seem to be understanding and trying to help.

It’s hard waiting because, for me anyway, whatever I do it’s always in the back of my mind. If I feel unwell or odd my head does overtime and then my mood deflates. Other times I feel on top of the world and invincible. Weekend is worse as the clinic is closed and there is no chance of an earlier appointment.

You seem to have had a hard time with extra waiting and then some more. Let’s hope the 27th comes around quick!

Hi punksorrell and chookie

This must be a very worrying time for you both, you’ll get loads of support here from people who know exactly how difficult it is waiting for appointments and results.

If you want to talk to someone who understands and can offer you a listening ear do give our helpline a call. Everyone working on our helpline either has experience of breast cancer, or is a breast care nurse, and has an excellent knowledge of breast cancer issues. They are on 0808 800 6000 and are open Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm
Saturday, 9am - 2pm

Best wishes Sam, BCC Facilitator.
