Waiting for results.

Just looking for a bit of advice really.

Went for a routine mammogram on Sunday, and was immediately called back for an ultrasound which was done by the specialist  radiologist. After looking at the results she decided that a biopsy was needed of a mass on my left breast. This was done straight away and the samples went to the lab. Results will be back next Sunday.

I’ve always had lumpy breasts that have caused some concern in the past; but this is the first time I’ve had to have a biopsy. I’m 55, with no history of breast cancer in the family. My question is; what happens next if the cells are cancerous? I know it depends on a huge array of different things, but really just looking for some general answers.  A bit flummoxed as I really didn’t expect it; although I suppose not many people do.

Hi Switchwitch. You will get your results from the biopsy which will say whether whatever they have found is benign or whether its cancer. If its benign which i think over 90% of referrals are then nothing else to do - if it is cancer then they will discuss the next steps with you - they will go over the pathology report and whatever that says will depend on future treatment. Its a really worry waiting for results and the worst possible time for you. lots of hugs x

Hi switch witch.

If your results prove positive, they will put a treatment plan in place. May I suggest that you take someone with you, and a notebook and pen. Ask questions and jot down the answers. You should be assigned a Breast Care Nurse, and a number where you can contact her should you think of any more questions later. Do not Google, stick with this site and Macmillan.

Sending big hugs, and hoping for a good result for you.

Dear switchwitch

In an earlier post I recommended the Helpline.  I did not realise you were not in the UK.  You can still access the Helpline from outside the UK- the number is (+44) 20 7620 0077

Very best wishes

Hi Switchwitch I too thought you were in the UK.Depending on your results you could be sent away and never to darken the door of the Dr at the clinic again. I hope that this is what happens for you as benign cysts etc can show up and need a biopsy.
Or you might need to have an appt with a BS/Onc. In UK this would be part of the next appt if your Dx does show some cancerous cells Here there are variations on this too.Basically other scans might be needed to decide on the treatment plan.

Please do not try to pre-empt what your results might be, easier said than done I know.Wishing you well please let us know how you get on J xx

Well, the results are in and unfortunately they are positive for lobular cancer. Now waiting for appointment with the surgeon to discuss treatment plan. Hopefully will get an appointment within three days. Still trying to take everything in. They say it’s small and they’ve caught it early, which is encouraging.
