Waiting for results :-(

Hi I’m 41 & discovered a lump in my breast 10 days ago - was referred to breast clinic just 5 days ago & the waiting is tough! Had mammogram followed by ultrasound - initially the consultant said oh it’s likely a cyst - after mammogram & ultrasound was told no it wasn’t - it was a solid lump & I needed a biopsy - was told it would be 7-10 days for results on average - went to book & was told they hold specific clinics for results & this isn’t until 26th! Since then I’ve felt a further lump just under the site of the original lump - is this normal? Do all positive results have phone calls within a few days of the biopsy? Feeling so lost right now! Darent get too positive but can’t even begin to think about the worst case scenario

Hi Karen. I am 42, and was diagnosed in march. I didn’t feel a lump, and was diagnosed because I was put on the early screening programme after my sister was diagnosed last year at 45. I got recalled after the first mamogramme for biopsies,  at the time they didn’t have a definite answer, then again for a further biopsy (I also had cysts on the same side and they wanted to check them out) before I was told it was a cancer, my appointment was also a week later.  I was warned that the biopsy can make it feel like there is another lump as you can get bruising in the area.  I think when you are younger your breast tissue can be dense so sometimes it is hard to read the mammogram so lots of younger women do get recalled.  The waiting is the hardest bit,  I know it is easier said than done but try not to get yourself in a pickle with worry. The uncertainty is really difficult.

Fingers crossed for the 26th.

Eggster thanks for your reply x the waiting is definitely harder than I thought - everyone keeps saying they’ll phone you if it’s a “bad” result so I’m hoping they’re right!

Charys thank you x guess the next 6 days will be torture ? My mum died from endometrial cancer almost 2 years ago & they’ve said they aren’t connected but it is playing on my mind x

Ah yes Jobey, its coming back to me now…

My surgeon said they wouldn’t ring with news, they like to give it in person - either good or bad. The reason she gave for this is that they like women to be treated fairly and consistently…i.e. if they called those who were ‘clear’ then if you had no call you would know it was bad news.

Thanks for all your comments x I’ve not really shared my worries in detail with my hubby - bit scared to open the floodgates - i just keep thinking get through the next day & im a day closer to getting the results - then I can plan what happens next x

Hi Karen

I’m a newbie and this is my first post.

I’m 48 and had my first mammogram on 9 June - the local NHS Trust are trialing extending their age range for routine screening.  I thought nothing of it but received a letter asking me to to go back yesterday where I was told there was a shadow on my left breast.  I was duly examined and drawn on.  Had an ultrasound and biopsies taken from two places and get the results tomorrow afternoon at 4 so can totally go with the agony of waiting.  Thinkning of you x

Hi Fiona,

So sorry you are going through this horrible wait too…if its any consolation…your response and waiting times are impressively good. Which nhs trust are you with ? Seems to be a lot of us 47 and 48 year olds having suspect things happening recently :smileysad:

Do come back tomorrow and let us know how you got on x

Ah Fiona I’m also in Nottinghamshire so I’m glad in one way as it looks like they’re on the ball so to speak in terms of diagnosis x 4 days & counting! Got my letter from consultant that gave slightly more details as to why the biopsy was done - irregular shape with ill defined margains - so I’m thinking that was important in the diagnosis - I did the worst thing - google!

Not great news - it is cancer x stage 1 grade 2 so Drs say very treatable x appointment tomorrow for MRI & discussion on start date for chemo x

Sorry to hear you’re joining us Karen, but thank goodness it’s been diagnosed when it has. Now it can be dealt with, so there’s every reason to be very positive about it.
Loads of support here whenever you need it.
ann x

Thanks Ann - still feels a bit surreal at the moment x

They’re going to get me started on chemo first, it’s a triple negative cancer so they believe starting chemo straight away is the best option, then surgery to remove what’s left that will be followed by radiotherapy - meeting the chemo dr tomorrow to discuss further x my only concern is I’m supposed to be going on holiday in just over 4 weeks x I’m hoping they wait until I get back x

I am kind of in same situation. I’m 43, long family history of breast cancer, discovered a large 3 cm lump, doctors, then initial consultant visit, two week wait for mammogram and ultra sound on same day, then they did biopsy on same day, also concerned about lymph nodes, so two biopsies. Now have to wait two weeks for results. Scared is not the word. Husband died 4 years ago, have a he partner but obv my kids are my main concern. Can’t be thought of even telling them I’m ill, coz they will almost definately think they’ll lose me, as they did their dad. I’m close to tears literally every minute of every day right now
