Waiting is So long

I feel so lonely waiting for results. I try and be positive but it then hits me. I’ve now been waiting a month from mammogram recall to the date I’m due the results. The waiting game is awful. After mammogram recall I waited 2 weeks for biopsy results then 2 weeks for ct scan and now waiting for results. Mastectomy is planned 24 jan. The bcn said it’s normal wait time.
Is this normal?

I had to wait 2 weeks for my biopsy results. Im guessing this is because the samples have to be processed and maybe it takes time for them to develop.
I don’t think there’s a normal. Where you live seems to play a big part on how long you have to wait. How many weeks will it be between your diagnosis and your operation?
It’s such a stressful time. Sending you a big hug. X

Hi I waited 2 weeks for biopsy results on 19 dec and my op is on 24 Jan. it seems every 2 weeks it’s something like on 5th dec I had biopsy then 2 weeks for results, now 2 weeks for ct scan results, then it’ll be 2 weeks Til operation (mastectomy). I don’t know why they don’t do ct scan at a similar time to biopsy then have all results together x

I suppose when I look at it from date diagnosed to op date it’s 5 weeks so it’s within their timeframes x

I’m in bristol. They seem happy with the timescale but to me it seems like an agonising wait!

I live in Watchet!
Somerset area including Bristol has very good record for meeting the set timescales. If I were still living on the south coast it would have been months for each stage of treatment. I know because my radiotherapy consultant used to work in the hospital I would have attended if I were still in Sussex and he told me that. So, although it’s awful having to wait any time at all we are actually lucky.
Big hug xx

I’ve had seversl biopsies and 3 operations. The wait for pathology in each case was 5 to 6 weeks. For this reason, I’m over a year into my treatment and still have a masectomy and radiotherapy to go. 2 weeks sounds very fast to me, but i know that the wait is so difficult whether it is days or months. The stress is unreal. So i hope your results are ready soon. And I hope it is good news. X

Hi there, 5-6 weeks is a long time isn’t it. My anxiety is thru the roof with 2 weeks!! Hope you’re ok. Thanks for replying x

Hello stafford22

Thanks for your post. It’s understandable that you feel lonely and worried waiting for CT results and planned surgery. Waiting for results can be an anxious time, as @jayesse and @bluesatsuma have also mentioned.

It can sometimes take a while to gather all the information and results needed to enable the team to make a plan about your treatment. Waiting a few weeks does not usually affect how well the treatment works and you may find the information on cancer waiting times helpful. As your breast care nurse says, this is not an unusual time to wait for results.

It’s important to let your breast care nurse or GP know how you’re feeling and about any concerns including waiting for scans and treatment in the future so they can support you.

They may be able to refer you for some talking therapies. Mindfulness can sometimes help.

Macmillan Cancer Support offer free sessional counselling which may be of interest to you.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can also be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. You can be in touch with your volunteer by phone or email and they can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0800 138 6551 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.

We offer a range of other free supportive services for anyone who has had a diagnosis of breast cancer which you may be interested in. They include face to face and online courses and events.

For more details about all of these services, please see the information on the link.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions.
