Hi I had MICAP surgery on 22nd May and saw the Oncologist on 3rd July who told me I need radiotherapy but there is a long waiting list. Can you tell me is there a time limit for this please as I have read that it’s normally done 6 to 8 weeks after surgery.
Hello, it is awful waiting isn’t it. There are NHS targets but the lack of machines and staff means they are often missed. I waited three and a half months in 2023. I don’t know if it is even worse now. It isn’t acceptable but little we can do. I hope you get yours soon xx
Hi myboobs
It’s understandable you would like to know if there is a time limit associated with the start of radiotherapy after your breast surgery .
Radiotherapy will usually start 4 – 8 weeks after surgery. Delays may be for different reasons, including problems with healing, the time taken to get results following surgery, and problems relating to capacity and staffing of individual units. How long you might have to wait for radiotherapy to start following your appointment with the oncologist will vary from hospital to hospital. However, national cancer waiting time targets set by NHS England, state that subsequent treatments such as radiotherapy after surgery are usually within 31days from decision to treat.
The best people to talk to about any concerns you may have about waiting times for radiotherapy are your breast care nurse or other members of your treatment team as they have all the detailed information about your individual situation and will know what is happening in your radiotherapy centre.
If you’re unable to resolve a concern, you have a right to make a complaint.
