Weight Gain

Hi Everyone,

This many seem like a suptid thing to ask but, do you think i could do the weightwatchers diet while i am on chemo?

Many seem like the leased of my problems but, i was going to join the week i was dx i left it because of the ops etc, no i want to get back on track with my life, and i am very unhappy with my current weight and fear putting on more because of the chemo.

I don’t see why not as WW is a healthy eating option rather than a fad diet, however from the comments from other chemo ladies there may be times during the treatment that you can only face certain foods so you might get off to a slow start, well done for this though

Hi Em

I lost weight on FEC which I quite liked but then put it back on when I switched to Taxotere, dont think I could have joined a slimming club as weight would fluctuate from week to week depending on steriods and fluid retention and also felt I deserved to eat what and when I wanted while having treatment with its side effects.

It may be best to have a chat with your Onc or BCN get their views, have you gained already while on treatment or noticed weight gain in other threads, I just tried to eat healthy with the odd lunch out and treat and made sure I went out walking as much as possible.

Thanks for your comments,
I’ve had one lot of chemo so far and felt ok, Only two days when i couldn’t eat much, I have losed 4lb,
I’ve always gone to the gym 2 or 3 times a week anyway so far i have managed to keep that up apart form the week i have the chemo,
I Think i will ask the bcn on my next visit

Thanks again

Hi Em

I’m at the weight watchers, but prefer to call it fat fighters for comedy value.

Anyhoo, I’m going more for damage control as opposed to meaningful weightloss. It’s all a bit weird, one week in 1/2 lb up then 1/2 lb down the next. I’m about 3 stone overweight and am desperate to not get any bigger :o)

It’s all ok, but sometimes, when you’re really feeling s**t you just want CHOCOLATE and lots of it
Keep at the gym, I’m trying to increase my walking - going for mountain walk tomorrow - sooooo excited.

Hi Em

I am posting a couple of links to a BCC factsheet and DVD which you may find find helpful. You can order them online and they contain information and advice about healthy eating and exercise during and after treatments:

breastcancercare.org.uk/docs/diet_and_breast_cancer_dec_06_0.pdf

breastcancercare.org.uk/content.php?page_id=7650

alternativley, you can order these from the helpline on 0808 800 6000.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes
Lucy

WW sounds like an excellent idea as I think it encourages eating more healthily and does allow room for those days when only a bit of chocolate will do. (It just helps you get to grips with the idea that if you eat that WHOLE bar, then it’s plain salad for tea!)

When I was first diagnosed, my reaction was to want to eat healthy stuff. I also looked at this pennybrohncancercare.org/index4f6c.html?o=1308 and have been trying to incorporate some of the ideas. Since 2 Jan, I have lost 8 lbs and before I went into hospital, I had loads of compliments on how well I looked. (Mind you, 1lb of it might be termed ‘cheating’ as it was all from my right boob. LOL Apologies for sick SoH but without it, I’d cry a lot more!)

Even if you don’t lose much weight, the feeling that you are taking control of one aspect of your life and making positive changes will surely help. (Well, that’s my theory.)

Good luck
Ann
