WHAT HAPPENS ON 1 YEAR CHECK UP?

Hi,

What happens on the one year check up? Is it a mammogram? or ct scan? What does happen. I am sure there are ladies on here who will tell me. I have my one year check up at the end of March and want to know what I am in for…!!! chris x

I had my one year check-up in November last year. I expect every hospital is different, but I had a MRI scan the week before my appointment and on the day of the appointment before I saw the consultant I had a mammogram and an ultrasound. I then saw my consutlant who had all the results, which were fine. He then said that all the results would be kept so that when next year’s appointment came round they could compare because the first year’s are your new “normal” so to speak. The hospital gave me a disk with all the results on too (I think in case I change hospitals or anything before my next check-up).

I was a bit apprehensive about the mammogram because the first one had hurt and that was before any treatment or surgery, but it was fine.

Hi

Thanks for the replies. Gardenparty I have my check up at the end of March. It will probably be mammogram and see the doctor just like yours. x

I could imagine it depends also on how “bad” the cancer was, lyphm involved, stage at DX (stage 1 or 3) and prognosis. I just guess, my first year check up should be at the end of 2012.

If your on annual check ups this normally means you were treated for primary breast cancer and are usually given a Mammo and an appt to see a doctor nurse to have a breast check and discuss any concerns… It can depend on your age as I know some unit will only do mammos every two years for younger women rather than annual ones.

We don’t routinely get MRIs and only those with a gene mutation get them at my unit but it’s not normally done at the annual check up just done about 6 months after the Mammo… But again that may be different in different places.

I was very lucky in that all my treatment has been done privately thanks to excellent health insurance, so I think that is why they do the full works of MRI, ultrasound and mammo. It’s a bit more time consuming but reassuring. My tumour was 4.5 cm, ER and HER2 positive and grade 3 but no nodes involved so it’s good to still be having a full range of tests regularly.

Just thinking is the 1st year check up one year after DX or one year after the treatment finished? I assumed one year after DX, but not so sure now.

It can vary a bit depending one when you had a Mammo… My mammos were usually in June but when I was diagnosed in 2009 I had a Mammo and biopsy at the end of Chemo for a suspicious leison which turned out benign… My appt at the breast unit stayed as June but my mammos were nov, with my MRI meant to be 6 months later… Was due in may but was forgotten to be booked and kept getting forgotten eventually got MRI in aug… But not had a Mammo since nov 2010 so the plan is to have it probably next month after treatment seeing it’s over a year, but I still see my consultant in June each year, although it may change this year as I as diagnosed in aug this time rather than may.

It is most likely to be a year after your Mammo… So your next Mammo will normally be about 1 year after diagnosis. Those having Chemo will be seen more often during the year as they are continuing to undergo treatment where as those having rads will have around 6-9 months before they get seen depending on how soon after surgery they has their rads.

I have a mammo in three days as I’m half way through chemo, just to check on shrinkage.

I promised myself if I get through this without mets and only have to come in for check ups and they just give me a boring mammo on my healthy breast, I’ll pay for a CT scan breast / abdomen privately. It must be worth the pounds surely.
