A fibroadenoma is a benign breast lump. Any breast lump’s status should be confirmed by a biopsy and it should be graded from I think C2 to C5. The literature/information always states that they do not become malignant.
The pathologist will look at the tissue and grade it in terms of its differentiation from normal cells I think.
C2 is classified as a fibroadenoma (benign)
C3 is classified as atypia
C4 is classified as suspicious of malignancy
C5 is classified as malignancy
I personally think that such a diagnosis can be wrong perhaps because the cells the pathologist is looking at from the lump are a C2 but others within the lump that he is not looking at are C5.
3 and a half years after a C2 result from my breast lump I was diagnosed with a grade 1 cancer in exactly the same place (where I strangely still only had 1 lump). So I would say if you are concerned at all and notice ANY changes with a diagnosed fibroadenoma then go back and see your doctor. My change was subtle but I was aware of it but put off going back because in my head I had been told it was a fibroadenoma and couldn’t become malignant.
