What is "inflective cancer"?

I joined because in January this year I had a routine mammogram, then secondary screening with biopsy, followed by a mastectomy in April. On the same side as I had had cancer in 2011 ( 2 WLE, a sentinel node biopsy and radiotherapy).

My mother (84) had cancer in her left breast in 2010, and had chemo and radiotherapy.
In March she had a routine mammogram, then secondary screening and a biopsy. She had a call from the breast nurse yesterday saying they didn’t have all the biopsy results back yet, but there were signs of “inflective cancer” and mum would need treatment.

But what is inflective cancer?

The situation isn’t being helped by mum being very deaf. Phone calls go direct to her hearing aids but she sometimes doesn’t get the clarity. She can sometimes misunderstand things, but is adamant that this is what the breast care nurse said.

Definitely not “invasive breast cancer”? Just thinking of how FIL mishears things.

Probably did mishear maybe it’s either Inflammatory or Infiltrative?

I think that’s likely. I don’t want to push things now, but will try to speak to the nurse myself when all the results are back next week.

As your Mum has obviously been given a Breast Care Nurse I would try to contact them and get them to clarify as I’m 99% sure your Mum has misheard . If your Mum doesn’t have any contact details try ringing the screening centre and explaining the situation. You could also ask that they make a note that your Mum is very deaf and will need someone with her at appointments to ensure that she has understood . Phone calls would need to be arranged in advance to ensure that you or someone else can be present .. A lot of people prefer to have someone with them at appointments anyway. Xx

Thanks. I was at the appointment and was with her when the call was expected, but it came the following day. We are trying to sort a way for her to bring me into a call but she’s 84 and it’s not easy.

Hi @Foxhill34,

Thanks for your message about the breast cancer diagnosis you and your mum have both had.

As you mention, it is possible that your mum misheard the word ‘inflective’ due to her hearing problems. We are unaware of this word in terms of breast cancer. A potential similar word related to a diagnosis could be invasive breast cancer, but we are unable to say if that is what was meant and would suggest contacting your mums breast care nurse for clarification.
