What level of exercise?

Hi all,

I’m hoping someone can help me or tell me their experiences with exercise throughout treatment.

I’m 3 weeks post mastectomy with recon using implant. I’d really like to get back to some form of exercise but I’m worried about overdoing and disrupting my recovery.

I was working out 4 times a week before my diagnosis which was 1st June. I’ve not worked out at all since then!! I have a cross trainer at home that I loved to go on pre diagnosis but I’m not sure whether that’s a good idea or not?

I’m back at work on reduced hours, due to go back full time next week and seem to be handling it well. I have an appointment at the breast clinic tomorrow to get the results from my surgery and hopefully be provided with a treatment plan. I have been given the heads up that it’s highly likely that I’ll need radiotherapy.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice or can tell me about their own experiences?

Thank you x

Hello @Jamie90

I had a lumpectomy and SNB a year ago last Friday: prior to my diagnosis and treatment I ran regularly and did regular barre classes for strength.

I was surprised by the “official” exercise advice following breast surgery: 15 minute walks 3 or 4 times a week for a regular exerciser

Having said that I found it quite uncomfortable for at least six weeks post surgery with any impact including walking (but treated myself to some North Face shoes with extra stability which made a noticeable difference to walking comfort) I was however fastidious about doing my shoulder physio exercises and found myself wanting to do more stretching and took up Pilates. I continued to work within limits in my barre class (it helped to remind me how strong my body is despite the BC)

The best advice would be to give it a go, but listen to your body and don’t overdo it. It is important to remember that a lot of your energy reserves will be taken up by the healing process both inside and out (so even if your external scars are healing there will be internal scars too)

Good luck with your recovery and any other treatment you need.
