When are we most at risk of infection?

Hi, when are we most at risk of infection during chemotherapy? My chemo nurse said first 10 days but I thought it was day 7-14? Also is it advisable to wear a mask in busy public spaces even outside of these days? I’m on day 10 and not been out & about yet but getting nervous about going to a small family meal tomorrow x

I asked this question before starting chemo a year ago next week, in particular because we look after our then 2 year old grandaughter one day a week. The oncologist advised to just carry on as normal, no need for masks, unless it makes you feel more comfortable, and to keep up with handwashing, particularly if wiping runny noses or nappies etc. My husband generally did noses and nappies, I never wore a mask out, washed hands before eating and as soon as I got home. I didn’t get any infections. Its important for you to still do nice things and things that you enjoy. Its hard enough without feeling like a prisoner.

Thanks that’s good advice and good to hear it from a lived perspective, thank you.

I know the lowest is day 7-14 as you said, for me I was just home not going out except for some short walk in park until it’s was overwhelming and now I just go out when I can or even using a wheelchair for long shopping with my sister, always I wear masks on busy avenues or gathering especially my in-laws when they gather with there kids (15ppl).
I keep sanitising my hands and everyone around me once they enter the house.
