when can you dye your hair after chemo?

I want to dye my hair but cant remember when you are allowed to do it or when it wont be bad for your hair or scalp. can anyone help? thanks Catriona x

Hiya

Im not sure when they recommend waiting till but you could go to your hairdressers and ask them to send off a little bit of your hair to check whether it is ok to go ahead with normal colouring. Not sure how long the tests take or how much they cost but probably best to be on the safe side with colours that could damage your hair. Alternatively you could use organic hair colours which are unlikely to cause you any problems.

I still have very short hair (last chemo 3 mths ago) but have metaphorically binned the wigs so am going commando from now on. It’s quite salt and peppery (a fair amount of grey), so I have decided to have really wacky bright coloured hair (I am an art teacher!), maybe orange or a coppery shade, a colour that looks artificial! If I must look like this, at least I can make a statement!

I went into my hairdressers today and she has given me a skin test, so far no probs, not itchy etc. She is a colour specialist and says this is all she needs to do. If I have a reaction, she will try a dif type of colour. It is an organic one, and I have instructions on what to do with my hair before I arrive to make sure the colour takes well. (wash with baby shampoo more than 2 hrs before app).

My app is in a couple of wks to get a bit more growth to work with, can’t wait, it will be another milestone!

Hello Catriona

I think they still say we should wait 3 months before colouring it.

I finished chemo 3 months ago and my hair is still very short. It also came back white and grey so I coloured it a couple of weeks ago. I used a product I saw recommended for delicate hair. It was a Daniel Field or Fielding Water Colour - cannot remember the name exactly - and I bought it in Sainsbury’s. It contains no ammonia or peroxide and is a powder which you mix with water.

I did a strand test and left it for 48 hours before doing my whole head. The result was a bit darker than I wanted so I washed it in baby shampoo a couple of times to take some of the colour out and now my hair is a nice palish blonde colour. It’s still too short for me to feel confident enough to go out without a hat in public but now that it’s blonde I feel able to go bareheaded with family and close friends now.

Good luck everyone

Love Anthi

My hairdresser was happy to colour my hair 6 months after finishing chemo but only using foils due to tender scalp. Even now 1 year on he is still advising foils only but I didn’t finish 18 x herceptin until 1.6.07 and am still on tamoxifen.

But having my highlights put back in really boosted my morale.

I coloured my hair as soon as it covered my scalp 3 months after chemo. I used a wash in/out one then I found an old nice’n’easy and put some of that on last week. I have just got another as didn’t look right too blonde so, am having another ‘do’ tomorrow, I had no re-action from dyes Love Eileen

Hi Catriona

I finished chem on 13th March and my hair is no about 1" ,was very grey but is now orangy pink. I did it yesterday morning with a wash in wash out shaders mahogany. Thought it couldn’t do any harm and I was depressed and cheesed off.

I thought I’d waited long enough and had read previous posts about testing but thought here goes - hope it does in the next couple of washes

Take care

Hello Marilyn

I tried a Shaders one first but it didn’t really take on my white fuzz.

Your new colour sounds rather fun but if you do want to get rid of it then Johnson’s Baby Shampoo works very well for getting rid of colour. Leave it on for 5 minutes each time and in 3 or 4 washes the colour should be gone. My hairdresser told me this ages ago and I tried it recently when my new hair colour was too dark - the baby shampoo worked really well to take out some of the colour.

Take care

Thanks Anthi. Washed it this morning after posting and it does seem to have faded a bit. Godd for a laugh - hint of pink - pity it’s not October.

Makes you think what’s in Johnsons baby shampoo to take colour out paint stripper. Not putting that on my baby grandsons head lol !!! Eileen
