When to give in and stop treatment

So sorry to hear this… I hope when the end comes it will be peaceful…

Thinking of you all…

It is so heartbreaking to read your post. I can’t imagine what it must be like for you, Terry. I’m glad that your family has made it over to be with you both. I hope that Kathy remains comfortable and pain free. Thinking of you…

Thank you for all your kind comments.

Just an update. We ( myself, Kathy´s mother and brother ) had an hour with her doctor yesterday.

She has Esophageal Varices which is quite rare. It means that her liver has grown so much it has broken some of the small viens in her Esophagus. The long and the short of it is even though they have now given her 11 units of blood she is still bleeding internally and they cannot stop it and her platelets are too low.
They expect one of the major vessels to go and that will be the end but they do not have any time scale. She remains her normal cheeful self and is busy writing cards for the future.

Dear Terry

I don’t think anyone can say anything to alleviate what you are all going through right now. But it sounds as though you’ve been really supportive of Kathy, and I know that I will hope for such support from my husband when it’s my time. I am sure it’s meant a great deal to her.

I hope that she is as comfortable as possible and that you are all able to make the most of the time that you have left together.

Best wishes.

Just to say Ian and I are thinking of you all at this sad time. I put a post on the prayer part of the forum so I am fully confident that the women on there will doing their best for you both. I know the medical team will be doing their best as well. Words are not much use at times like this so will send you both our best wishes.

Another update.

They have managed to stop the internal bleeding but her platelets are at 18,000, they were down to 9000 per mlltr normal people have between 350,000 and 500,000.

Shis is still on the critical list but while she is not bleeding she is at least stable. One hell of a roller coaster at the moment.

Thinking of you. Best wishes.

Sorry for not keeping up to date. I am pleased to say Kathy is still with us.

They discharged her from hospital but with warning that they could do nothing to get her platelets up to normal levels and that she could bleed again at any time, if it was a large bleed they would let her go.

I put those small airhorns all opver the house ( it is a big house !! ) so that if she suddenly started to bleed she could sound a horn and we could rush to her,so far no more problems.
When she left hospital the doctora ( (a) is a female doctor here a male doctor is a medico )took her brother and myself to one side for a chat and said even is she did not bleed again time was short, she said it could be one month ( already passed nearly ) or two or even three.

Yesterday we went back to the doctora and she said her blood was a bit better and she might not bleed again as she has gastric bands in her esophagus which hold the main veins in place. She offered more weak chemo which Kathy accepted and we are hoping this does not start the bleeding again.

It is very much living on a knife edge now, wondering hour by hour if the bleeding will start again, but knowing each day she is getting weaker as well.
However Kathy remains incredibly positive and strong, we might even go the beach this weekend ( sorry but the temerature is over 25dg now )

Love to all
