when to talk about faulty gene

I have had a lumpectomy and a couple of nodes removed and am due for the results on Wed this week.  I am more concerned for my daughters than myself as my 2 older sisters had BC and one died of it.  When I raised this with the consultant he wanted to focus on me and I’m afraid I can;t really remember what he said about checking the females in the family.  In fact all together there are 5 daughters and 6 granddaughters who could be affected.  At what point is this discussed and tests taken please?

Hi barbersdrove,

Could I suggest you give our helpline team a ring and have a chat with them regarding your concerns regarding the females in your family, they’re here to support you.  Calls are free 0808 800 6000 lines open weekdays 9-5 and Sat 10-2

Barbersdrove - I think that the surgeons think that this has nothing to do with them and not really their area of expertise.  Ask your GP to refer you to Genetics and they will know what the statistics are or  the next step. I know exactly where you are coming from as one of my sisters had BC and the other a different type of cancer (both have since died but not from BC). I also have a daughter and it is indeed a worry. I would definitely speak to your GP and ask to be referred

Take care
