My mum had a right hand side mastectomy and lymph node removal on the 13th July, but she has heard that her chemo should start within 6 weeks of the date of the operation otherwise the chemo is no use to her!
Can anyone confirm this, we asked her PS and he said this is correct but her scheduled start date for her chemo is 30th July, 7 weeks after surgery - so we are very worried - though she has been recommended for the tact2 clinical trial … mum is very worried, like as all, though it feels wrong to let her know how worried we about this start date for her chemo …
Please anyone can you clarify any of this for us???
I had a delay starting chemo because I had to have other unrelated tests and it was just over 8 weeks between surgery and chemo. My oncologist did not seem to think this was a problem. It would be as well to check with your Mum’s oncologist or you could phone the helpine on this site.
I hope that what you have been told is not right as I would hate to think that I am having to go through all this treatment for nothing!!
Spoke to mum’s oncologist today and he said no its fine to start after 6 weeks, as people cant always start within 6 weeks due to a number of different circumstances. So he has assured us its not unusual to start outwith 6 weeks.
I hope I didn’t upset you regarding our querey!
Hope your treatment is going well.
Thinking of you!
I know more than one person who started chemo after a gap of c2 months. This would not be allowed to happen if the treatment was thought to be less effective after a gap.
I had Mastecomy 15.8.06 and had first chemo 10.10.06 Which was 8 weeks. I had infection on TRAM scar where they did reconstruction.
No problems with delay
I had my 1st operation on 2 July and then the 2nd operation to remove all my lymph nodes on 23 July, I am not due to see my Oncologist until 5th September, so chemo wont be until mid September. I queried this long gap to but they say it is normal. Must others have waited over 6 weeks,
No you didn’t upset me with your query as I knew from my oncologist that he wasn’t unduly worried about the delay. I’m glad that you have been reassured as well so that it is not an additional thing to be worried about.
Hope all goes well. My chemo number 3 has been delayed by a week as the nurse couldn’t get a vein this time and I have to have a PICC line put in next week. So another delay unfortunately!
