Which operation to choose?

Hello everyone,

Firstly, this is a horrendous experience for all of us not matter what our circumstances, but secondly (and most important) WE WILL get through it

I’m 45 and having a hard time deciding on which operation to choose. I have ruled out mastectomy and am left with the choice of:

  1. Lumpectomy (right breast)
  2. Lumpectomy and with breast reduction to both breasts (therapeutic mammoplasty)

Weighed up pros, cons, risks, been round and round it all in my head, asked surgeon loads of question but still can’t decide.

Anyone been through this? In a similar situation? Thoughts, tips, help?!!

Thanks xx

Hello neart

I was never offered a mastectomy. So my choice was a lumpectomy, which my surgeon said would leave a dent. I didn’t want that as I said I didn’t want to be lopsided. So I had lumpectomy, therepeutic mammoplasty and reduction in the other breast. I did have large breasts, 38G I think ! But I am pleased with the result, probably a D cup now. It was a long operation, I was out for 6 hours, the surgeon said they removed a lot of breast tissue. I healed in around 7 weeks, slight infection on one side so was given antibiotics for 3 weeks. They are quite symmetrical and pert now .

Hope this helps

Hello. Im 33 and already decided i want mine off and gone! All the celebs do it to increase there chances so if its good enough for them its good enough for me too. They usually try and make you have a lumpectomy but you can push for a mastectomy and thats what i will be doing.x

I had a lumpectomy and then a re excision to get clear margins. I will say, the lumpectomy is not bad- it’s the lymph node removal that was a pain!
I was told that radiation could shrink your breast. I thought about a reduction also but then decided to wait till the right boob is done changing from all this and go from there.

Thanks so much that’s really helpful. Did they operate on both breasts at the same time? And how does the scarring look now? Thanks

Thanks for your reply. What does your beast look like after the lumpectomy is it a scar or a dent that’s noticeable? Thanks

Hi, yes both done in one operation. A team for each one I was told. Scars are fading quite well.

My incision was on the bottom of my boob- so far I don’t notice that the shape has changed. My bras fit the same… I can’t tell what the area is my incision will look like since it was only a few weeks ago but so far the skin seems the same (minus the incision spot). I think it depends on the location of the lump and the size. I feel lucky that mine was on the bottom.
