Hi there, I was diagnosed tnbc in mar 2025 I completed Neo adjuvant chemo, lumpectomy and had radio. I am currently still receiving immuno ever 3 weeks (Pembro). For the past 3/4 weeks I have been waking with what feels like a sore throat / swollen glands in me neck. It subsides most days or if it doesn’t on its own then it does after I take ibuprofen. I don’t see my onco any more just have calls with the nurse before my treatment. I mentioned this at my last call and she said ‘keep an eye on it’. I am just concerned as it isn’t going away even if it’s a side affect of the pembro I’d just like some advice, who should I try speak to? Gp? Unsure where to go with it… thanks!
Hello kmarie26,
Thanks for posting.
It is understandable that you are wondering whether the sore throat and swollen glands you have been experiencing for the past 3-4 weeks are a side effect of pembrolizumab.
Pembrolizumab can cause many side effects but not specifically sore throat and swollen glands. These symptoms however can be a sign of underlying infection due to the impact of the drug on your immune system and blood counts. If you have not checked your temperature, it will be important to do so.
It’s good that you mentioned this to your nurse in your call before treatment and she told you to monitor this. As these symptoms continue, we would suggest that you contact your team to discuss further. You should have been given an alert card or 24 hour telephone number to contact if you notice new or persistent symptoms during your treatment. The team can assess your symptoms further and decide whether you should be seen at the hospital or they may signpost you to your GP.
