Why does chemo have to ruin the taste of wine?????

As if it isn’t bad enough having to go through chemo & all it’s various side effects, why does it have to ruin the taste of my wine as well??? Currently my mouth tastes like I’ve been licking a metal bucket for 24hrs & everything I eat or drink tastes of eau de metal as well!!! And there’s no pleasure at all in looking forward to a glass of wine when it tastes like that!!!
Anyone else missing their favourite tipple or trying something completely different due to nasty taste changes?

Dugsy - One of the WORST side effects was not being able to go “Oh to hell with it, I’m having a bottle of wine” - wine tasted AWFUL on chemo and wouldn’t recover til Week 3.
I tried Red wine, Rose, White, all alcohol tasted vile.
I sympathise!
But when Chemo is over, you eat and drink EVERYTHING IN SIGHT

(Or was that just me? I had 4 bouts of oral thrush and lived off noodles and Weetabix for about 10-14 days at a time. I never had the metal taste thing, just had everything tasting vile and my mouth was dreadful)

my friend who has just started a second round of chemo because his tumor has grown had discovered that this time he cannot drink scotch, but has developed a taste for champagne, not even sparkling wine,as to be champagne.

glad i am not paying his grocery bills

Champagne??? LOL, now there’s a thought! I should have tried that - because sparkling water was one thing that didn’t taste dreadful, plain water did though!
Maybe it’s the bubbles.

I’m loving that he’s drinking champagne  (Yes, couldn’t afford to do much of that!!) I said I was going to have a bottle of champers when chemo was over but just could not bring myself to even buy a bottle of carpentier at half price in tescos, because even £14 seems like wayyyy too much! But TBH I was happy guzzling £4 Pinot Grigio after all the trails I had with oral thrush!

Oh Dugsy - I like you have found that one of the hardest side effects, I love my wine but it tastes awful until at least week 3! I did however after a bit of experimenting find that cider (not the very dry ones) tastes nice, especially if it was sweeter than I would normally drink and oddly margaritas with salt on the rim of the glass and loads of ice went down pretty well too. Asdas and tescos do a ready made mix for about £4. Ihave found that taste and smell are bonkers at the moment - my hubby just ate a microwave rice and I swear it smelt like wee, and all I want to eat at the moment is mash, bland fish and white toast - everything else makes me feel pukey - but was only fec 2 yesterday so hoping that will ease off in a day or two!

Sickening thing is even with no wine and not much food haven’t lost any weight - and I could do with losing a few stone!

Ruby.x

Ruby you have my sympathy!!! I also need to lose about 3 stone, so maybe the lack of wine will have some benefits!
Champagne sounds like a great alternative - deffo worth a try I say, I shall drink it to celebrate just still being here!

I agree with the changes in taste too - we went out for dinner last night & nothing really appealed, so I chose steak - something I’d never normally choose! Mind you it could have been a piece of old shoe leather, the amount I could taste!

And funnily enough diet coke tastes ok at the mo & that isn’t something I’d normally drink! Getting my hubby to knock up a curry tonight & hopefully that will taste good!

I didn’t lose any weight from having to spend a total of about 8 weeks eating noodles and weetabix and drinking sparkling water.
Trying to find some light in that particular darkness I kept up a mantra of “at least I’ll lose some weight” - No.

Mind you, it maybe didn’t help that as soon as I got my taste back, because I’d been fantasising about food I’d eat everything in sight.
Of course, all the wrong things

Ginger wine worked for me!

Yes my favorite red wine tastes like cat p-ss for at least half the time… Then when I get some taste back I drink like a fish even if it still doesn’t taste quite right.

I wonder if there is a logic going through this thread? Fizzy drinks?
People are talking about fizzy water, champagne, diet coke.
Also cider and one of the things that I can sometimes manage is a very cold can of lager. Also slightly fizzy…

Maybe if we’re desperate we could try Alka Selzer?

Lots of love to all fellow boozers

Chemo somehow managed to switch me from a merlot loving red wine drinker to a quaffer of the occasional glass of rose (inc sparkling.

Now, 2 weeks after final rads, i’m still a single glass of rose woman (and it tends to be the half strength stuff you can get or a watered down full alc version). I’m sure its good for me but i think I miss the ole lush version me

I’ve switched to champagne!

I’ve been to a couple of parties and had a glass of champers thrust in my hand but it burned when I drank it. Like I was drinking battery acid. Gutted. It’s spirits + mixers for me. Looking forward to a nice glass of wine or bubbles after chemo’s finished…mmmmm…

OMG - sat here with a vino and panic stricken - WINE TASTES BAD ON CHEMO - bad news! I’m going for my first Onc appt tom after mx 7 weeks ago and feeling very low at the mo as my skin condition has exploded and now you tell me wine is gonna be off the menu!!!
Hope you all well - maybe I’ll cope… Hmmm
Love and hugs to all

Me too i was a wine drinker ,cant stand the stuff now really burns my mouth .Cider on the other hand i can go with .
Water tastes absolutely disgusting !!!know i should drink it but i was even convinced the new house we moved into had something wrong with the water!

I have found that chemo ruins the taste of many things. My favourite tipple is cider and I cannot drink it after chemo but I can drink Guiness. It was a similar story when I was pregnant but then I think it was my body craving different things. This time I think it is the chemo messing with my taste buds. Pre chemo treat on a Friday night was noodles with curry sauce - tried it one after one chemo and I doubt I will be able to have it ever ever again. Water tastes nasty for about 2 days post chemo. Fizzy drinks feel like they are burning my mouth. I am happiest with bland food such as bread with spready cheese, instant mash etc. Also, doesn’t matter what week it is, if I eat out then I get the trots within the hour. Doesn’t matter what I have to eat. Only exception being this weekend, 5 days post EC 4 and I had half a dozen oysters and a pint of Guiness - mmmmmm absolutely yummy and no nasty after effects. I have about 4 bottles of champagne in the cupboard left over from 25th wedding anniversary celebration. Will crack one of those open after chemo finishes.
