Hello,
I am in the midst of putting together a little guide book on wigs for people on the breast cancer journey and I need your help! The book is essentially a light hearted take on having to suddenly come up with an alternative to hair as well as a guide full of practical tips to help. I am not an expert on wigs but I am an expert in having to navigate the wig world quickly and with the trauma of cancer on my shoulder! I have a few questions…
Do you think this would be a useful thing to be able to pick up and have a read of in the chemo unit?
Do you think the light hearted element is too much? I would have loved to read something like it but I wouldn’t want to belittle anyones diagnosis by making light…I dont really go into detail on cancers at all.
Is there anything useful that you would want included?
At the moment I have no idea how to get this out into the world, but I needed this guide six months ago so I assume others might and I want to help!!
Aw I love this idea!! Good on you. Yes definitely I think this would be a worthwhile resource. I would quite like a light hearted one (most booklets you get after a diagnosis are so doom and gloom). You could always put a little disclaimer at the start saying it’s a more lighthearted take so if that’s not for you maybe don’t read on?
I would love if your guide included younger women. I first had chemo age 16 and had awful memories of trying on wigs, which would have been more appropriate for my granny!! Ended up not wearing the one I got in the end because of this.
This time around with my breast cancer I was 29 and things have got better but still a lot of the guides feature pictures of only older ladies. Also some of the wig shops near me were very much for older ladies (could be just my area though!) I ended up going online because of this- so would have loved some advice on this!! Some ladies I met around my age also would have loved guidance on talking about your wig with your children? May be something to include not something I’ve ever seen in any booklets I was given.
Thats just my personal experience- I’m sure others will be along with some great advice
Thank you so much for taking the time out to reply and for your great ideas! I will absolutely pop in there about talking to my kids about wigs and hair loss.
I feel the same as you regarding the literature out there not being aimed at those younger women with a cancer diagnosis, I just need to remember what it’s like to be young again!
