Wigs and headcoverings

Hi all, my Mum is on her 2nd round of TCHP, and as expected is losing her hair. I’m going to shave it for her at the weekend and I’ve bought her a couple of soft beany type hats in preparation. As an FYI I used an Etsy Shop called BeautifulYouuHats and I think the quality and fabric is good.

She ordered a wig from amazon which was awful and put her off having a wig, but I think she should try and get one via the NHS. Does anyone know if this possible? She’s 73 and on a pension, so definitely doesn’t have a big budget.

Or, if there’s an online wig store you’d recommend, that would be great. I have searched previous topics but most of the links there have expired or aren’t in the UK.

Thank you!

Hi @mum-a-lums30

Synthetic wigs are available on the NHS. They are free in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In England, she’ll usually have to pay a charge for an NHS wig. Or your mum may qualify for a free wig if:

  • She is an inpatient when the wig is supplied
  • Her weekly income is low
  • Your mum or her partner are receiving Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit or Universal Credit and meet the criteria
  • She has an NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate
  • She is named on a help with health costs (HC2) certificate

If she’s entitled to a free wig through the NHS, she can get this from her hospital or a wig shop in her local area. We have some more information about this on our website: Wigs, scarves and headwear | Breast Cancer Now

Your Mum may be able to get a wig from Jo on the above link. I sent a brand new Rene of Paris Alyssa wig to her a few weeks ago. It’s a short pixie in a toasted brown. It may still be available. She has other things such as cap, scarves aswell.

Jo is fantastic. She has sent me a few hats and also shower cover for picc line. I got my wig via hospital. It cost me £200 it’s a very good match. Around the house I wear beanies or a cap as the wig has been quite warm in this unusually hot weather!

If you keep an eye on their clearance/sale sections you can sometimes get some great deals X

Such a shame this isn’t extended to England. She might be on pension credit, I’ll check with her, thank you x
